Home from surgery yesterday-observations & questions

Surgery was last Thursday. Docs say everything went textbook (VSG) and I noticed one thing when they started feeding me jello and broth after my scan was clear:

Burp, burp, burp, burp, burp OMG burp. It's was like it would never end, but it did finally slow down after day 3 or 4. Take a tsp, wait 10 minutes while burping 40 times, then another. By the time I left it was 2 tsp and less gas. Sound about right?

One thing I've noticed coming home, I've been trying to drink Powerade Zero, but it feels like I'm bloated all the time no matter how small I sip. Does that sound right?

Biggest issues I had were the gas and my legs were very sore and I couldn't bend them for almost 4 days, but it finally went away and is just barely sore now. But it amazes me it takes an hour to drink 8 ozs. I know that will change but holy crap, Batman. They said my stomach was the size of a male ring finger.

Other than that, feeling tired and drained, all seems to be well.

Also found some really good One a Day gummy vitamins for adults and chewable calcium (1200 mg) at Walgreens I started.

Gummy vites are not like chewables or tablets.  They are missing stuff.  Careful.

I had RNY but it sounds totally normal to me.  I still burp a lot - and I NEVER used to burp before.

Stay away from those gummies....not good for us or at least not good for RNY folks. I'm not sure about your surgery type. It will get easier to drink. Welcome home....keep sipping and walking. Walking helps with the gas...also Gas-X strips.         Connie
I just had RNY on 09-28-10 at Carilion Hospital of Roanoke.  Post surgery instructions said not to take any vitamins the first 2 weeks post surgery.

Follow-ups are conducted by a nurse.  After two weeks, gummy vitamins were recommended for multi-vitamins and Tums for calcium by Carilion nurse.

Nurse never mentioned this, but I supplement those with chewable B12 & Biotin.

Gummy vites just don't have everything an adult needs, and you can't absorb the Calcium carbonate that's in Tums. You just don't have the necessary stomach acid to break it down.
I got the VSG and that's what they suggested was gummies.
Do follow your surgeons instrudtions, I'm sure they know what works for their patients.

    Good luck on this journey!!

Not really. My legs hurt more than anything and took a few days where I could walk decent. Had odd pains in my chest, but with mine, they said it was C02 they were pumpiing in my stomach to check for leaks. Legs pains and burping were the worst parts.

LOL! I burped like CRAZY after my DS, and I'm sure my stomach started out larger than yours. I finally figured out that while I was eating a lot less, I was still swallowing as much air with it as I had been pre-op---but I no longer had room for it.

I'm almost seven years post-op, and I STILL burp a lot, especially when I get hungry, and just after I've eaten. Doesn't really make sense, but when the burping starts I know I'd better eat soon---or stop. (*grin*)
