What Kind of alcohol to drink.

I am approaching my one year surgiversary, and will be allowed to have an alcoholic beverage. I was never a big drinker and stuck pretty much to wine coolers and strawberry daquri's. I am wondering what I will be able to drink now. We are not allowed carbination and I am wondering about the amount of sugars since I tend to lean towards the sweeter fruitier drinks. I also don't know names of drinks etc. so I am a bit lost. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Sounds like you won't miss it at all. How about you forget the alcohol. I drink virgin mary's when I go out, and no one seems to think twice about it.
    Another loser
Seriously, forget the alcohol altogether!  That is the best advice I can give you.........
Apparently she doesn't want to forget the alcohol altogether, you guys.

    Some suggestions:

Bacardi and Diet Coke, poured over ice to get rid of *most* of the carbonation.

Cranberry juice and vodka, again poured over ice with 1/2 the amount of juice they'll try to give you.

    Jack and Diet Coke.

    Anything and Diet Coke.

Stay away from most wine, super fruity drinks and drinks made with non-diet soda.

Try drinking at home first so you can find out before embarrassing yourself in public how well you'll tolerate alcohol. The last thing you want to do is pass out in public or do something you'll regret, right?

And, as with everything post-op: Moderation is key. Going out and celebrating should be about friends and making new friends, not getting as drunk as possible. Have fun!

Wine spritzers may also be a possibility.  At a year out, she should be able to handle the carbonation, right?
Less concerned about fitting into the world - your world, that is, 'cause it doesn't really matter any more. None of it really matters any more. Yes, I am alone, but then again I always was as far back as I can tell. I think maybe it's because you were never really real to begin with. I just made you up to hurt myself... and it worked.  Yes, it did! - Only, NIN

    Yep! - but I don't like them so I didn't recommend them ;)

Just be careful, I wasn't much of a drinker before surgery (in fact if I went to a baseball game I would be able to finish a beer only if they went into extra innings!).  This past thanksgiving dinner I had a few sips of dessert wine and was totally intoxicated!  Make sure you aren't driving the first time you try alcohol, have a bit and enjoy!

Stick to a good red wine.  Cosmopolitan is good too.  Lemoncello with whiskey is good.

Honestly, skip the alcohol if you can.  Stick to the red wine.

IDK, I've been able to drink a little bit of everything I've tried. My fave pre-op was also strawberry daquiris, and believe it or not I've had a couple post-op too. I'm a dumper, so I generally have about 1/3 or so of mine and my husband finishes it off. It is SO refreshing. But I've also had wine, mixed drinks, etc and so far no problems.

I agree with the poster who said to try it out at home first though (whatever you'll be drinking). You don't want to make a fool of yourself because it hits you too hard too fast, or if you're a dumper, God forbid you have a dumping episode when you're out with friends.

Also, alcohol goes to my head a LOT faster now, and I wouldn't even think of driving after having even one glass of wine.

I know we need to be extra careful of transfer addiction, but I drink so rarely (maybe one every 3 or 4 months) that it just hasn't been an issue.

    Enjoy your experimenting!

I have to agree with the other folks who are advising you to abstain altogether.  It appears that you've never really been much of a drinker anyhow, so why even bother?  It's not like the alcohol is going to be good for you.  Maybe celebrate your surgiversary with a healthy fruit smoothie or something else that promotes your healthy lifestyle.  Put it in a fancy wine or cordial glass and celebrate that after a year, you are still making positive choices for your health and body.

    Happy surgiversary!!!
keeping in mind that those of us who have had WLS are at a higher risk than most for developing an addiction like alcoholism - for various reasons we could go into if you want - there is no reason you shouldn't have a drink if you want one.

I find I don't like things as sweet anymore, your experience may be different. go slowly, don't drive and pay attention to what your body feels like.

I'd suggest a glass of wine, say a white zin.

i like   a  glass  ( a single glass )  of very dry red wine  .  Gives me  quite a buzz !

im a dumper so the mixed drinks (  which can have up to a thousand  !  ) calories  have to stay away -  ill have a sip justto taste and leave the rest .  Theyre ALWAYS  a sugar bomb and very often a fat bomb too ...

a skinnygirl  margarita  might be my  second choice ...

I’d advise you to totally skip the alcohol too.  There is indeed risk involved.  Some post ops can handle alcohol without any problem, but for others it’s an entirely different story.

BUT if you’re determined to have a drink, I agree with the other posters to do it at home.  If you’re going out, make arrangements for someone else to drive.  You might not realize how much you’ve been affected.

Good luck whatever you decide and please be careful.

Thank you,  I fully intend to have my first drink at home.  I am not wanting a drink to celebrate my one year that just happens to be when my surgeon begins allowing it.

Light cranberry-pomegranite with Vodka and a twist of lime makes a wonderful faux Cosmo!  The light version of the juice still has some nutrients, very little sugar and tastes like the real thing vs the "diet" version which is just "kool-aid".
That said, be very careful with alcohol...malabsorbtive WLS patients are very vulnerable to over-doing...
    Congrats on your surgiversary!

Sweeter, fruitier drinks? Look at the calories and sugar in them .  Warning since your surgery you will get drunk faster and are in danger of transfer addiction so after all of your hard work why?  I used to drink Kahlua & Cream and all that junk and do not miss it at all. I have worked too long and too hard to get here.Oh and also Long Island Iced Tea as well.  No thanks.  Congrads on your one year anniversary.
That is why I wa seeking advice on here, because I realize the calorie content and wanted advice on lower cal, etc. I also understand the risk of transfer addiction and that you get drunk much easier and more quickly. I am just looking for advice for a drink if I am at a wedding or such or just want to have an evening to relax and unwind a bit.
