Responses to "you took the easy way out"?

I had my first experience with a couple of haters the other day. They were virtual haters, so they were pretty easy to shut down. I have a tendency to get sharp-tongued when I'm angry or taken by surprise by cruel words. I would rather be nice, or at least smug, instead of b*tchy.

What do you say to people when they say you took the easy way out? I would like to have something prepared and rehearsed in my head so I sound classy as opposed to coming off like a Jerry Springer guest.

    Suggestions???

I point out the lifestyle changes I have made and complications I have endured.  I watch my calories and the source of my calories, I exercise up to 9 times a week, I run 5Ks.  I simply needed a kick start to allow me to get to a weight where exercise was neither painful or dangerous.

Honestly?? I just say: yep, I did take the easier way out- I like to work smarter and not harder, but in the end it is all work.

I know that most people on here are offended by the easy way comments, but I am not- for me this was a million times easier than diet and exercise alone, and I am not embarrassed to admit I needed the help...

I am still loving life with my sleeve! Been maintaining at or below goal for over 4 years!

I wish we had a like button for this.
That's pretty much how i feel too. Although I would never say it has been easy - it has definitely bee easier.

I find very few people say that to me as they know I get up at 3:30 to go to the gym and work out for 2 hours before going to work.  THey also watch me track everything I eat.
I know a lot of people have something witty, but I just say they are welcome to their opinion. I have had numerous complications and was out of work for several months, so really NONE of my friends see it as the easy way out, but they do question my decision as if it is worth it!
I've always liked Dr. OZ's response to Oprah when she said pretty much the same thing....."A woman with a BMI of 40 runs the same risk of DYING by age 50 as a 40 year old woman who is diagnosed with breast cancer. We don't hesitate at the idea of surgery to save her life. WLS is the same. It saves lives" To bring that point further home I buried my own sister - a morbidly obese diabetic one month after her 50th birthday......the age I am now. Susan

Susan I also love that response.  Normally Dr Oz grates on my nerves, but I do love this answer.

Fawn and I are in the minority, here, in that we did have an easy time losing to goal so why get mad.

what you want to say depends on if you think they are up to being educated. if they are not you can simply say

    SO?

and wait to see if they can justify the underlying and ridiculous implication that obesity is caused by a moral failing and needs to be countered by SUFFERING.

think about it, why would the "Hard Way" make any sense at all?

the clean eating group is not about weight loss and you don't have to be a vegetarian (although if you are, that's OK)

    I love your response.

I like to point out the "easy" things they choose every day

"Why did you drive to work today when you could have walked?"
"Why use indoor plumbing when you could just squat on the sidewalk?"
"Why wear shoes, don't you have feet?"
    "Why do diabetics take insulin?"
"Why not hunt for all your own meals?"

Or any other quick comeback. As a species it makes sense to always choose the "easy way" over the hard way.

Only an idiot chooses the "hard way" out of some aversion to the "easy way":

These are such good answers -- I was all "sold" on my own until I read some o the other posts.  MPM and LL are pretty wise people!

Not sure that it really was the "easy" way, at least not for me. Easier, sure, I'm less hungry and know my limits better. Life is easier now that I'm not diabetic, but I still "diet" and excercise every single day and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. I eat as though I were still diabetic, just in smaller quanitites.
I call it the smarter way out if anything. I try to be tolerant of the haters though. I used to think it was the easy out option before I started this journey, learned differently at the info seminar...

    I have one like Susan's...

Telling a person they had WLS is cheating is like telling an alcoholic that using Anatbuse is cheating. Call it a tool, or call it a weapon, just do what you have to to win and ignore the ones who haven't even taken a side.

7/18/10: 211lbs, 10/16/10: 174 lbs, 1/21/11: 146 lbs, 4/20/11: 131 lbs. Insulin FREE since 7/2010, "normal" BMI since 12/2010. I'm 31, 5'5", happily married, with a fabulous 3 year old boy, and hope to add to our family in the near future

"Don't we ALL take 'the easy way out?'  I don't know about you, but I didn't kill something to make the last hamburger I ate, walk to work or knit my own socks, either.  And I even call the Auto Club if I have a flat tire!  I'm all about using whatever resources are at my disposal."
I am not really adding anything here.  Just "hi!"

I would probably say that I had a non-functioning metabolism and it was pretty much the only option for me. It's not the easy answer. For most of us, it's the only answer.
Pretty pretty please, don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f*ckin' perfect.

Wow! These people are so ignorant.I would simply say if it's so easy why wouldn't you do it too.Hmmmmmmm
I have found that the Jackasses that usually say those things are plain out JEALOUS.

Ive lost a few "friends" along the way of this journey, and it was all due to THEIR insecurities. Then u also have the FAKE friends that always find a flaw or fault in the way u look....oh but ur arms are flabby, oh but u need to work out ur stomach, oh but u have 5 scars on ur stomach...blah blah blah... Yea ***** come talk when u lose 80Lbs of ur own! LMAOOOOO!

Pay no mind to these people that have some sort of problem w/their OWN bodies and/or identities.

    Hatersssssss!

I could also walk to wrok and not use a car, manually switch the channels on my TV or some things like that.   Some people take cholesterol loweriong meds... some thing./.. they could choose to exercise and eat just healthy diet and not need to take the meds... and so on, and so on...
