Ok, I have a major question. I am hearing alot of stuff about the artificial sweetners not being good for us.  I like to go to 7-11 before work and get my small coffee with ff 1/2 & 1/2 and two packets of splenda.  What is a girl to do?  Alot of co-workers were talking about the sugar in the raw brand but I don't want the added calories?  What is a safe way to go about this.  Coffee is not the only thing I put splenda in.  Does that mean crystal light is out too? (which I depend on to help me get through the day to reach my daily intake of water)

I think to each their own, if you cannot have the real sugar and the fake is bad for us then what are we to do???

Artificial sweeteners can be a real problem.  I can't deal with Aspartame or Equal -- I get intense headaches when I use it.  If I have too much Splenda, I'll get a headache too.  Have you had your surgery yet?  What kind did you have?  I have hypoglycemia now and I try not to use any sweeteners whatsoever.  My pancreas seems to think that anything that is sweet is sugar, and I release way too much insulin and get tired and go to sleep.  What fun!

There are people who are now pushing for any sort of sugar to be regulated like tobacco or alcohol.  Sugar has lead to a lot of the obesity problems in our country.

I myself cannot use artificial sweetners either as I also get headaches. Im also not a fan of splenda either, so I tried stevia.... I hardly use it for anything, but it works with out tasting artificial, and it smells good too. Hope you find something that works for you. ....Also Crystal light has nasty artificial sweetners in it...I just drink water...much better :)

I compare what I used to put into my body to whatever the substitute is.

    For example:

One coffee with cream and sugar, two chocolate-iced cream-filled doughnuts, and a package of Hostess Brownie Bites for midmorning snack equals size 24 jeans

One coffee with ff 1/2 & 1/2 and two packets of splenda equals size 4 jeans.

Splenda has been around a long time and is perfectly safe.  So is Crystal Light.  Stop worrying about giving up the small things that will help to make your new life enjoyable and successful.  I consumed so much Splenda and Crystal Light that it was an obsession.  But I was also wearing a bikini while I was drinking from those water bottles spiked with Crystal Light.

Some people are unable to use artificial sweeteners.  My heart goes out to them.  The journey would have been impossible for me without being able to use Splenda.  If I had continued to use sugar, I am convinced I could never have gotten to goal and remained at goal for all these years.

1 serving of sugar is what, 14 calories?  If you are a very light user -- it's NOTHING.  Go ahead and have REAL SUGAR.

If you're a heavy user.  IE:  Me?  I'd drink half-sugar in my espresso.  I'm a crackhead.

So, until I find a solution for my excess Sucralose consumption -- or a suitable Stevia-blend -- I will be using the yellow packets.  I go through a disgusting amount of the stuff, when they autopsy me, I'll be preserved in Splenda.

I can't use aspartame due to my epilepsy. That, and I think it's tastes gross. It's been hard giving up some of the drinks I once liked because of the medical reasons, but if it means no seizures, then I'm a happy girl! I don't mind Splenda myself, it's as close to sugar as they are going to get, and for some reason, I think I am one of the few people who doesn't like Stevia. I tried it once at Trader Joe's and found it terribly bitter.

I can do this...I know I can. It's just going to take time & patience.

    I don't sweat it.
    I use Splenda.
I cook with it, drink it, put it on fruit, yogurt, whatever.

I will continue to do so.
    It causes me no problems.

We switched to Truvia at my house.  It is 0 calories, and a natural sweetner.  Made from the same stevia plant, just a sweeter part of it.  You can pick it up at most stores now, Target for sure.  There are also some nice treats out there that are made with Truvia instead of sugar.  Some cranberry juice, some ice cream snacks, heck even vitamin 10 water uses it.

But most reasonable people wouldn't, given that it has been extensively tested and there is no evidence of any harm:

Sure... same way that they told us that cigarettes are fine, or some drugs they used on humans, or that NutraSweet is fine, and others man-man product are fine...

We are large scale lab-rats , experiment on large scale on human population...
I got adverse reaction after 2 years of using it...

No. This has been tested scientifically for decades. It is not comparable to cigarettes, for which there was a cover-up and testing done only by manufacturers of cigarettes. These are double-blind, placebo controlled studies done by universities and regulatory agencies who would not benefit from a particular outcome. There is no reason to doubt them, and to dismiss them without evidence to the contrary is to give in to logical fallacies or conspiracy theories. I'll stick to facts, personally.

I stick to facts. I get welts and rashes and urticaria when I use splenda... It takes 2-3 weeks when I stop for them to clear.   No other changes in my diet.  Fact of life.   Many people report issue like that.

    http://splendasickness.blogspot.com/2006/03/long-list-of-sym ptoms.html

    and so on...

And there are new study that are coming over and over

    i.e.

James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health, has expressed shock and outrage after reading a new report from scientists outlining the dangers of the artificial sweetener Splenda (sucralose).

In animals examined for the study, Splenda reduced the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50 percent, increased the pH level in the intestines, contributed to increases in body weight and affected P-glycoprotein (P-gp) levels in such a way that crucial health-related drugs could be rejected.

The P-gp effect could result in medications used in chemotherapy, AIDS treatment and treatments for heart conditions being shunted back into the intestines, rather than being absorbed by the body.

According to Turner, "The report makes it clear that the artificial sweetener Splenda and its key component sucralose pose a threat to the people who consume the product. Hundreds of consumers have complained to us about side effects from using Splenda and this study ... confirms that the chemicals in the little yellow package should carry a big red warning label."

This is a blog, not a scientific study. The study he describes (but doesn't name) is on animals. I'm talking about human testing which has found no ill effects. Just because you might have a sensitivity to it, doesn't mean that others will have a reaction. Also, you can't know for sure whether it is the Splenda causing it, because you have no control group and haven't subjected yourself to blind testing, or whether it could be psychosomatic in origin. This is why the plural of anecdote is not data.

I don't trust any new drugs or lots of chemicals but I think in moderation it would be okay.  I do use it, but try not to go nuts with it, I feel the same way about food colouring and anything that is manufactured in a lab.  You know they will tell you sooner or later its all gonna kill you.
