I am new to this site and I am needing help so much to understand what is going on with my body.  I am a week post surgery, have been following my diet as directed but I am so so hungry and this is NOT mental.  This is whats up, before surgery when you missed a couple meals for what ever the reason may be, I would get an upset stomach, achy and sometime feel nauseated which, would trigger me to eat something if not I would get sick and/or become a real mean person.  Well im still having the upset stomach and nausea, like i haven't eaten... whats wrong with me? Everyone I have spoken to prior to surgery and in my support group said " they would forget to eat cause they never felt hungry"... Did I do something wrong or what? I am so confused at this point, I do have an appointment with my doctor but I was hoping for help that maybe one of you may have had this experience..

    Thank you for reading
    One hungry and confused person

    Your blood sugar is dropping.

Are you getting lots of protein?  You're not drinking anything sugary, right?

     Thanks for your reply,

honestly I am not getting enough protien, I am having issues with tolerating certain foods and such. Anything that comes out tasting sweet makes me violently sick. I am NOT eating anything or drinking anything sweet but I have tried those adkins meal replacement shakes and they are WAY to sweet tasting. HELP?

Mix unflavored protein powder into yogurt, soup, whatever you are eating.  Try the Unjury chicken soup - you can order a sample at unjury.com.  Eat Greek yogurt, plain.  If you like coffee, try adding some protein powder to that.  If you add a little chocolate or vanilla, it shouldn't make it taste too sweet.  You need to mix the protein powder with an ounce or two of room temp liquid to make a paste, then stir that paste into the hot coffee.  You can dilute protein shakes to make them less sweet, too.  Look for something with more protein in it than Atkins, though, those are not very high in protein.

Rather you feel hunger or not, your body needs fuel, and in this case protein.  So if you are not achieving the goals of 60 grams of protein a day it can effect your ability to function and your moods, drinking other liquids is important too, but protein and walking (for me) is what got me through.

    Good Luck

What surgery did you have? Is it possible this could be reflux? Also, how is your hydration? Getting even a little dehydrated can cause nausea.

Yep, I agree that you need protein when you feel that way. I had my RNY March 2011 and my feelings of hunger are intense. I have learned that the first thing to ask myself is "how much protein have I gotten in?" Once I take the protein those intense feelings go away. I have tried SO many different kinds and have found the Champion Pure Whey Stack is my favorite.

Thank you for your suggestion, they are intense and I think it is the protein issue as i am getting about 20grams right now...so I have jipped myself this week which would totally explain why im having such issues..

30 to 40 ounces of fluids, and 20 grams of protein? You feel hungry because you're STARVING! Perfectly normal.

At this point, fluids are the most important---you really need no less than 64 ounces. Protein---30 grams per day by 30 days post-op, and 60 grams by 60 days is a common rule of thumb. Just keep on pushing fluids, especially protein shakes.

What's your surgeoon's protocol on post-op eating? Are you allowed to have mushy things like cottage cheese yet? It's a great protein source.

You've gotten some good suggestions and responses.  Being one week out is one of the most difficult times post-op.  Feeling nauseased with an upset stomach happens often.  What worked for me was hot peppermint tea, you might give this a try.

I would talk to your doctor -- perhaps a PPI, like Prevacid or an anti-nausea med.  I was on anti-nausea meds for several months after my VSG and I still have to take Prevacid.
