So, continued to take metformin like a good girl despite upper right abdominal pain which radiated to my back on the right side.  Also felt tender on that side and swollen.  This concerned me since this is where the pancreas and liver are.  I have had this sensation before after drinking alcohol when going out with friends anit would last several days.  The solution to that was to just not drink anymore and I have not had any alcohol for the past two years and the pain has not returned till the metformin. I only had one diarrhea episode since starting it but I usually struggle with constipation issues (I know too much information sorry).  Also have had nausea which I know is common with metformin.  So last night pharmacist called to see how I was doing with the medication and I told him about the right upper abdominal pain under my breast bone area and radiating into my back.  He strongly suggested I call the Dr. and let him know which I did today.  I thought maybe he would want to do some lab work to check liver enzymes or pancreas but he didn't.  He did take me off the metformin and said it could be related to the metformin so he is placing me on Januvia 100 mg tablets once a day.

Does anyone have any experience with Januvia?  Is it a good drug to treat type 2 diabetes?

I would be concerned that he didn't schedule any tests on your liver and pancreas as you have a history of pain with alcohol and now this!!! The symptoms as you describe sound like more than the usual gastric problems associated with Metformin.

Nothing to offer on Januvia, I'm afraid - I hope it works out for you!

Thanks for your response.  I agree about the blood test, especially when he has me scheduled for a basic metabolic panel to be drawn lab wise next week because of the blood pressure medicine he put me on.  All he would need to do is add it on to that lab work.  Everything I have read says that liver enzymes should be drawn before starting metformin.  From what I read Januvia is also known to cause pancreatitis with hemorrhaging.  If my pancreas already has problems, do I really want to add this to my issues.  I just don't know about this.

I would definitely suspect that something requiring more testing was going on.   I was on Metformin for about 10 years and never had any issues like you describe.  When the Metformin ceased being effective we switched to Januvia.  I diodn't have any problems with the Januvia except the cost.  I have a high deductible insurance, every time I got the Januvia refilled it was about $250.

Along with the Metformin and Januvia I was also on For the past 2-3 years I was on injectables (Byetta then Victoza) both of which can cause pancreatitis.  I didn't have any issues with those, except for cost.  Finally before my surgery I was on Levemir and victoza.  I tolerated all of those fairly well.

Luckily for me, I was able to stop all meds after my surgery.

    Good luck to you.
