Not sure if everyone is familiar with the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental disorders) but I read an interesting article this morning about some of the changes that are coming in the next release of it.  One of the things that caught my attention was "binge eating" now being considered a mental disorder.  As of right now the only thing the current standards classify for eating disorders are anorexia and bulimia.  Knowing a lot of us dealt or maybe even still do deal with binge eating, how do you feel about it being classified as a mental disorder?  Think it's a good thing or a bad thing?  Think it'll be productive or counterproductive for getting more of us on the loser’s bench in the future?

Not sure how I feel about it... I was a binge eater..(I say was because hopefully I can keep it in remission since surgery...)..... I didn't binge eat daily, I definitely had triggers that would set me off....maybe once every week or two.... I know that when it would trigger I felt like I had NO CONTROL to stop it... as if my mind couldn't control it....and I would never feel full when it was triggered...

but, I just don't know how I feel about it

I agree with it.  We purposely do something to hurt ourselves knowingly.  Totally seems like a mental disorder to me.  I don't know rather its going to hurt or help anyone get wls, but hopefully they can find the link in the brain that allows this behaviour to happen and continue so we can learn to turn it off without getting MO and needing wls.

I guess if smoking and drinking are mental disorders, I guess binge eating is too.  I don't think it is a mental disorder.  If it were, they could design drugs to control it.  It's an addiction.

i was a binge eater. i never crossed the line to bulimia because i always hated throwing up...   so i ate like a bulimic...  and it made me fatter and fatter...

as far as i am concerned, any use of food  as medication is disordered eating,...  whether you purge it from your system or not...

As both a psychotherapist and a recovering binge eater, I think that it is a very good idea that binge eating could be included in the new DSM V. It is a condition in and of itself, and it will be easier to get insurance coverage for therapy treating it.

Anne, I think you're right about that being the intended approach.  My only fear when i read about the change is will we miss the deeper issue just at the cost of being able to get a diagnosis on paper?  How often is binge eating the problem itself and not just it being a sign of a bigger problem?

not sure if there is a deeper issue, necessarily.

if you dolly back far enough to get the biggest picture you can - it's all just LIFE after all.  what is working for me (3 1/2 years out, been at goal a long time)  is working on the rest of my life - since I am kind of bored with the whole eating subject.

I realized I have Binge Eating Disorder and consider it an addiction to a behavior, not a substance. at the same time, I have a problem with processed carbs - they tend to make me want more! and can trigger a binge - and this problem is overlapping (obviously) but not the same thing.

how to deal with these issues best will vary from person to person - try out things and see what works for you.
