I will be having VSG in April.  I have heard that the RNY and DS usually eliminate type II diabetes.  And I know that the weight loss from surgery also helps a lot of those with sleep apnea to no longer need their CPAP machines.

While I realize that losing weight will also help with all those non-specific aches and pains that come with carrying the excess weight, what I didn't know was that the weight loss can also improve or eliminate plantar fasciitis.  Because the only other person I know with plantar fasciitis (besides myself) is very thin, I guess I didn't think of it as a condition related to obesity.  So learning about the possibility of that getting better after surgery was a very exciting surprise for me!

Have any of you had other conditions that have improved or been eliminated totally after surgery that surprised you?

    Isn't that odd...

I have "unshrunk" somewhat (I got back some height I lost since my 20's). I put up a post on it on the VSG and VSG maintenance boards and found that most people are like you and lost height if anything, but at least 4 other people are like me and found some.

    Go figure.

     It is odd.

    I went from 5' 4"+ to maybe 5' 3"  -- and a size 9.5W to an 8.

My plantar fasciitis is gone.  So are my migraines, depression, fatty liver, type II diabetes, eczema and weight-bearing related joint pain.
On the flip-side, I have to watch out for low blood pressure and reactive hypoglycemia.  As well, my muscle recovery after strength training is slower than before.
    But I wouldn't trade it...

I have the Band, my high BP went away right after the operation, while I was still in the hospital and hadn't lost an oz. The nurse said she sees that a lot and has no explanation, but thinks someone should do a study on that.

My shin splints are gone!! which is wonderful.... but the biggest difference for me (I am only 7-8 weeks out though)... but the biggest difference to me has been all mental .... I feel like there is hope... I feel excited.... like I have been given my life back... I feel like I am losing weight slowly, but I don't even care... being able to have control over what I eat.... to be able to turn food down... I just feel very empowered...

So, I have to say that I just mentally feel really good!

    Hello

My diabetes is in remission and only 7 weeks preop. Also incontinence, I had to wear depends, as of last week no more depends. I was hoping for the diabetes to start clearing up, but the incontinence was a surprise, a great surprise!

I lost my high blood pressure, my high cholesterol, my sleep apnea, my borderline blood sugar, my knee pain, and a load of laundry a week (at least). My clothes are smaller, so more items to a load. I can also use smaller suitcases

I also lost my self-consciousness about having my picture taken. At the same time I was working to have surgery approved I started with Jenny Craig. When I found out I was approved I dropped it. Later, when I wanted a before picture, I had to go back to them and ask for the one they took because I couldn't find one other picture of me at my largest.

I lost Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stress incontinence, a serious pain in my shoulder that I'd put off seeing a doctor about.  I sleep better, my feet got smaller, I lost an inch of height, I gained mobility.

Stress incontinence too?  I cannot WAIT to have this surgery done.  I have had that occasionally since my third child was born and always figured I'd be stuck with it for life.

Diabetes symptoms disappeared immediately post surgery.  Unfortunately, I found knee pain and plantar fasciitis after weight loss - probably due to increased exercise.  But both are fine now.

I had it, and YES, it went away!  That being said, I still am very careful about what shoes I wear.  When I know I'll be on my feet a lot, I always wear my Sketchers or Birkenstocks.  I'm over 6 years post-op, but still not taking any chances.

I am no longer being treated for the following conditions I had pre-surgery:

    diabetes
    hypertension
    sleep apnea
heel spurs (is that plantar fasciitis?)
    GERD
    depression

I also lost my abusive, active drug addict husband of 23 years because I had the strength to end the marriage, and the desire to live a better life.

I did develop alcoholism (now in recovery) and I found the love of my life.

    Not a bad trade!

    Blessings, Jill

I no longer have GERD, sleep apnea, high cholesterol or stress incontinence. I wear a size 4 and have a nice figure- I lost the ugliness. I lost my self consciousness and my dread of social situations. I lost my hatred of exercise and being out of breath walking around the block, and now run 5 miles a day. I lost my depression and now embrace life with all of who I am.

I think that is enough great losses that came along with my weight loss! I am so grateful!

Reflux was an instant cure, no high blood pressure. A lot of aches and pains resolved. I lost a shoe size, and 16 pant sizes (or 8 if you go by two's), 18 inches around the middle and half a boob.

I was a very healthy fat person except for borderline hi blood pressure and pre diabetes, both of which are genetic.

I still have both, but they could have gotten worse if I didn't lose weight.  I am pretty much the same, but just feel and look better in general.
