    Water How Long Before Eating?

I know we should not drink with our meals (so hard but I ma back to doingit) and we should wait 30 minutes after a meal to start drinking water again.

When does your surgeon want you to stop drinking water before your meal...15 minutes?...30 minutes?

    Thanks for your help.
     30 mins

I've never understood the not drinking before a meal part- it doesn't make sense because water just washes right on through.

But I do wait 30-45 minutes afterwards.

Mine says 0-5 minutes before. I've looked int our how digestive system works and water and other liquids run right through us so there is no reason to wait more than a nominal amount after drinking to start eating. The liquid is gone so it's not going to mix with your food and make it mushier (which is why we don't drink while eating).

For after meals, I try to wait at least 45 minutes. Sometimes I need to wait longer. But our stomachs start emptying at around 20-30 min. after we eat so I want to have enough of a gap that I'm not pushing food through there the second the pylorus valve starts opening but letting a lot of it empty out at a natural pace first.

RnYers haven't got a pylorus valve though so I'm not sure how that changes stomach emptying times.

I was instructed no fluids 30 minutes before and no fluids til 30 minutes after meals.  The classes taught that the food needs to be in the pouch and not be washed away with fluid so we stay full with our food.

How does drinking before a meal wash food out of your pouch?  The food isn't in the pouch yet.

Drinking before meals lubes up your pouch making it easier for food to pass through...stopping the intake of liquids by 30 mins gives the pouch a chance to sorta dry out so that the food stays longer and waiting 45-60 mins after gives the food a chance to digest and the longer the food stays in your pouch the less hungry you will be....that's what I was told and it makes sense to me!!!

But the pouch is lubed up whether you drink or not.  Your stomach and intestines are lined with mucus.  It's slimy in there.  Not drinking does not cause the pouch to dry out.

My surgeon said to stop drinking 30 minutes before a meal, but he didn't have a good reason why.  I drink right up until I'm ready to eat.

I also drink before my meals but do wait 30 to 45 minutes after meals.
I agree with some of the other posters. I drink right up until I eat. As fars as waiting afterwards, I must admit, I "cheat" there, for lack of a better word. Depends how thirsty I am, like after a workout. And it's usually just a sip or two. U really just can't drink alot if ur eating.

But from what I understand, the logic is it will wash the food outta ur pouch, thus making u hungry faster. But since I eat 5-6 times a day, I never allow myself to get hungry. Well not like hungry pre-surgery.
