    Carbs - ugh

I'm on the mushy part of my diet right now. I noticed the other day that when I ate mashed potatoes, I felt so sluggish. Today, I blended up some mac & cheese, and I felt the same way...no energy, yucky and sluggish.

Before surgery, I was a CARB FREAK! I would have SO much energy, I could have climbed a mountain (not that I would)...but now, after eating carbs, it takes everything I have to even move.

    Is this common?
I am still pre-op but I feel that way after carbs because of my blood sugar it spikes and drops I get so tired after eating them I sleep. Perhaps it is similar for you?

I'm not the food police but I have to ask if your doctor/Nut approved carbs so soon after your surgery? I know my doctor's office literature states no carbs until 75% of my overweight weight is lost.
My surgeon's assistant AND the nurses in the hospital all recommended mashed potatoes & refried beans (veg) after surgery. I had the refried beans (I was crazy to eat those) & I had the most painful gas! It was awful. Never again! The nurses also suggested peanut butter. I love it but I haven't eaten it since the surgery. I'm afraid I couldn't stop at 1 tsp.

Another thing I know for sure: When I eat protein first, that's all I can eat at that sitting & I'm full.

thanks for the response I have seen several state mashed potatoes and was kind of scratching my head.. it's so hard to try to grip it all with everyone's doctors advising such different plans. I'd love to see a study on which plans result in what results... I'm kind of geeky so it really intrigues me.

I know for me personally potatoes and mac and cheese would be too slippery of a slope so I won't tempt fate.

I can't wait to see how this journey works for me.
I'm with you, Lisa. I had mashed potatoes right after surgery (a week) & ate 2 tiny bites. I haven't had any kind of potatoes since. I have no craving or taste for pasta. I do crave toast (I have Ezekiel bread low sodium, super-high in fiber), but I can't eat a whole slice! This is shocking coming from someone who loved carbs before RNY. Just like you, my tummy doesn't feel good after I eat carbs.

Also, I've had hardly any cheese since my surgery. & I was a cheese addict. Cheese just has no allure for me now.

Mrs.Litch - Yes ma'am, it's part of my stage 2-3 diet. Right now they want me to concentrate on getting 70-80 grams of protein each day. (Stage 2 (full liquid) and Stage 3 (the mushy's/puree)) ((I carry my packet of information around like it's a bible...well, it IS my food bible))

Every doctor is different, so just listen to your doctor after the surgery.
Goddess - I eat gas-x like crazy. I had gas pains just once...and once was enough for me. Right now, I just feel like crap after eating potatoes or mac&cheese.
Yep, the carbs are messing with your blood sugar. Even though they're on your surgeon's post-op eating plan, I think your body is saying 'No'. (*grin*)
Mushy stage was the worst for me. I agree, mashed potatoes and refried beans may be soft but they're carby as hell.

Have you tried Greek yogurt yet? That's about the highest protein mushy food I can think of. I know, it's an acquired taste. I was allowed the fruit added ones at your stage. Add stevia if you need it sweeter. Some people add sugar free pudding mix (add a little extra milk and stir a lot), sugar free jello powder, sugar free preserves. Can you have cottage cheese?

Open yourself to possibility and possibility will present itself.
I skipped most of the things suggested on the mushy stage; they just had way too many carbs! I continued with soup and Wendy's chili (my dietician told me that was fine as long as I mushed up the beans real well). I also had tuna fish, chicken salad, egg salad and things like that after running the meats through the  food processor.

    Best of luck to you!
