Weight Loss Surgery Directory

What do you eat on an average day?

     Hello,
I  am   just getting  started in this  whole   process and I  am  hoping to  get the VGS at  some  point.  For  all of  you  who are  post  weight loss surgery I  am  wondering  what an average  day of  eating looks  like for  you. I  know that  how  much  you can  eat  changes  but are there foods  you  physically  cannot  eat anymore?

    Starting Weight:275 CW:222 SW:??  Goal:160

Keep in mind that amounts and foods will vary not only from surgery type to surgery type, but from person to person as well.

I'm 8 years post-op from the DS, and effortlessly maintaining a loss of 170 pounds. A typical breakfast for me would be something like 6-8 slices of bacon, a couple of scrambled eggs, and a tomato, or an omlet made with 2 eggs, 2 oz. of sausage, three slices of cheese, and onions, peppers, and tomatoes.

Typical lunch would be a sandwich, heavy on the meat and cheese. Maybe a bacon cheeseburger, or some chicken fingers with a salad.

Mid-afternoon snack would be something like a couple of sticks of string cheese, nuts, or, if I've got it, a hunk of some kind of meat. (My favorite!)

Dinner would be 6-8 ounces of some kind of meat, fowl, or seafood, with a small salad, a few bites of potato, maybe a yeast roll. Dessert if I'm not full.

Evening snack would be about the same as the afternoon snack.

On an average day, I eat around 2500-300 calories, with it coming mostly from protein and fat.
As I go through this process it changes for me. I could not drink plain water, eggs, chicken, or crackers to name a few things but now I can.  It is different for everyone and as your body heals and adjusts you will be able to tolerate more and more. The trick (from what I have been reading and trying to stick with) is learning good eating habits during the "honeymoon period" so that once you are able to eat anything your habit is to chose the healthy foods.  It is not always easy and now 6 months out I find it more and more challenging each day. Good Luck

I had RNY, not VSG.  But there is nothing I can't eat.  I don't eat things high in sugar because it makes me sick (dumping syndrome) but I could eat them if I chose too.  I eat six times a day, about a cup of food at a time.  A typical day for me is something like this:

Breakfast - protein bar or shake
Lunch - vegetarian chili, big salad, or half whole wheat pita with hummus
Snack- cheese, or fruit, or almonds
Dinner - some sort of beans, part of a Chipotle burrito bowl, or the same thing I had for lunch
Snack - roasted chick peas, leftovers from dinner, or Greek yogurt
Snack - protein shake or bar, or Greek yogurt

I had a VSG 3 years ago.  There is nothing that I can't tolerate, nothing ever, except eating too fast or too much.  Even though I can eat what I want, I know that eating carbs makes me crave carbs, so I try to keep them low in maintenance.  I probably eat between about 1400-1800 calories a day, heavy in protein, low in carbs and excercise only moderately.  I take two Nexium a day for GERD but had it before surgery

    Best wishes.

Hi! I'm 8 weeks out and really just starting to get into a routine:
Breakfast: protein shake made w skim milk
    Snack 10am: 1/2 a greek yogurt
Lunch: 1/2 cup tuna or chicken salad w/ a few whole grain crackers
Snack 3pm: sugar free jello, I can eat like 3/4 of it
Dinner: grilled chicken or fish, or whatever my family's having, last night I had a meatball.
    Snack 9pm: protein shake

I just absolutely have to stay away from the carbs, a few weeks ago I shared a piece of cake with my daughter and then craved carbs for 2 days.

The only thing I drink is water and protein shakes with the ocassional stop at Dunkin Donuts for a 99cents unsweetened iced tea :-)

With my pouch being new somethings still bother me, cold stuff, I have to keep my water out of the fridge, i had a few bites of hot dog, that hurt, and hamburger doesn't feel good either and isn't worth eating.

      Month 1: -28lbs  Month 2: -19lbs Month 3: In progress!
I had VSG five weeks ago.  I am just now able to eat most all foods.  There are some I still don't feel ready for like nuts, popcorn, rice, and bread.  I also haven't tried much red meat yet, though I did eat a BBQ rib yesterday (just one) and have also done well with chili.

On a typical day I eat:

    Breakfast:  Premier Protein shake

Lunch:  Baked chicken leg or 1/2 cup cottage cheese or 1/2 cup tuna salad or 2 oz grilled chicken breast, with maybe a few slices of cucumber (peeled)

    Snack:  Premier Protein shake

Dinner:  2-3 oz of chicken or fish, 1/4 cup of some kind of non-starchy vegetable, though sometimes I will eat beans

Snack:  String cheese or hard-boiled egg white

During the first two-three weeks, I often ate sugar-free Jello, sugar-free Popsicles, sugar-free Fudgsicles, and sugar-free pudding for snacks, but I seem to have lost my taste for sweets. Though most people don't, I do get a bit hungry between meals sometimes, and a piece of string cheese or an egg white usually does the trick.

    Hey Pinkchickadee!

I had VSG surgery on February 15, 2012 and it has been the best decision I ever made!

Physically, I have had no issues with tolerating anything. Although my stomach can handle anything, it is my personal choice to stay away from carbs such as pasta, bread, rice and potatoes. These are the foods that caused me to become super morbidly obese in the first place. However, I eat "good carbs" such as fruit and vegetables.

A typical day in regards to eating would be:

    Breakfast- Premier Protein Shake
Snack- 1 hardboiled egg and 1/2 of a banana
Lunch- 3 oz tuna with green onion and celery, with 3 whole grain crackers
Snack- 1 light cheese string or 1/2 cup yogurt
Dinner- 3 oz of meat such as chicken, fish or beef once in a while with 1/2 cup of salad (spinach, green onion, tomato and cucumber)

I also eat 1/3 cup of almonds almost every day.

I had VSG 11 months ago. I am now at goal.

During the losing phase, here is the daily plan I followed: 600-800 calories, less than 40g carbs, greater than 70g protein, greater than 64oz fluids, plus some exercise (3-5 days per week for 30-60 minutes each time).

Now that I'm at goal, I'm closer to 1400 calories per day. Still focusing on protein, trying to limit carbs (eating carbs makes me crave more carbs, it's a vicious cycle). Typical day:

B: protein shake OR one scrambled egg w/cheese
    S: greek yogurt
L: 3 oz grilled chicken with veggies
S: string cheese and small amount of fruit
D: 3-4oz grilled meat (chicken, beef, seafood, pork) with some veggies
S: nuts or small amount of peanut butter or cheese

I now run several miles per week (training for 10k) plus do yoga, core, play volleyball, zumba, etc. Working out makes me FEEL good now.

Surgery makes things a lot easier but it still takes hard work on my part. Choices are very important!!

    Hope this helps!

I'm 15 months out, BMI of 23, about 127lbs.  I am now eating 1500-2000 calories a day.  A typical day for me goes something like this:

Wake up: Coffee with cream & 1 scoop protein powder

Breakfast, 1/2 cup cottage cheese with blueberries

    Mid-morning: Atkins daybreak bar

Lunch:  2 1/2oz swiss cheese, ryvita cracker or tuna salad

    Mid-afternoon: Clif Mojo Bar

Supper:   2 1/2oz Cheeseburger made with grass-fed beef or a small steak

Evening: Protein coffee & Klondike No sugar added Krunch

Late evening: trail mix or cheese

I am constantly on the run during the week and tend to skew toward 'convenience'. On the wekeend I'll have eggs, bacon for breakfast and make things like Kebobs, curries, or stew. I avoid carbs, generally, but I have wraps I'll make, etc.   My supermarket is next door to my gym, so I shop for fresh produce  and protein almost every day, bring home what looks good, etc.
