    Reactive Hypoglycemia and Exercise?

How does exercise affect blood sugar for folks with Reactive Hypoglycemia

At first, I can get a little lightheaded.  I drink juice  then and that clears it right up.  I also drink coffee and or chai tea in copious qualtities before i set out which both helps burn extra calories, makes exercise easier and raises my blood sugar and keeps it up while im exercising .

After a few days I notice my  endurance is much better and my body has accommodated to the challenge .  Overall, I feel MUCH healthier because i exercised .

    ((()))) Good luck LL

Thanks. I'm one of those horrible people who got to goal withOUT exercise, and never quite felt like doing the whole exercise thing. But after I had surgery last year and I had to remain pretty much immobile for 8 weeks, and ever since I've had some issues with regain. Ultimately after a lot of self-evaluation I've decided that my small issues stem from a variety of sources:

    1. Loss of muscle mass after 8 weeks of immobility
    2. The loss of muscle mass was followed by my slothful period of each year: summer school and summer vacation. I always gain a bit at summer time due to sloth.
    3. Being diagnosed with Reactive hypoglycemia around the same time as the surgery in the spring last year resulted in a lot of difficulties trying to alter my diet appropriately
    4. My anticipated firming up of muscle tone and loss of weight coincident with resuming school didn't happen this year. I was puzzled greatly by this. To go from a month of sloth to teaching always makes me lose weight (since WLS, and probably before when I never weighed). I realized then that class sizes of 50 precluded my normal dynamic style of teaching, walking up and down the classroom, moving up and down the desks. Since there were 20 more student desks than the classroom could hold, I had NO room to move around. So my normal efforts at "exercise" (ie, moving energetically 4.5 hours a day, 5 days a week) were blasted to smithereens.

So finally my conlcusion is that I should try to cut back on a few calories. Currently I'm consuming 1200 to 1500 a day which worked fine for me for a long time. In addition to shaving off a little bit on the calories (hard to do with the RH), I also realized that I must work on improving my muscle mass. Without improving that I'll never maintain. I figure that getting my muscle tone back to how it was prior to my ****ygectomy in march last year will help me get back to the place where my current food consumption will result in maintenance instead of weight gain.

Then yesterday I went for a walk for an hour and had my first RH episode in months. So I wondered if it messes up my blood sugar balance (as in, must eat more to avoid RH, or must eat less to avoid RH)

I sure HOPE I don't have class sizes of 50 this fall.

My whole life ( WAYYY before wls ) ..anytime i sincerely exercised  for an hour or more  after no exercise at all...  I just about DIED afterwards .

Precisely , because , like U  I make a sincere effort to MOVE my butt.( btw not everyone does lol)

a nite later i was  FINE and ready to go again.

TWO nights later I was getting up   AFTER the exercise and  wearing a sexy dress OUT   lol..i'd gotten a second WIND

ALL  I know is regular exercise makes me feel like dynamite in the LONG run....  I look  and feel great in the SHORT run...  it short-circuits   AGING..

what more could U ask  from an ac tivity ?  Oh...and its FUN...

I'm allergic to exercise. But I sure as heck enjoy moving my butt. When I was 2 years out I suggested a whirlwind trip to my husband, and we extended the invitation to my dad and my stepson. We spent Day one visiting a safari-like zoo, walking miles and miles that day. Day two we went on a five mile kayaking trip, and day three we went on a hike that was rated as the very toughest, not suitable to individuals who aren't in top physical condition. We were scrambling over boulders the size of SUV's and it was exhausting and extremely strenuous, especially as a lot of said boulders were slick with moisture. What was awesome for me following this three day trip of exceptional activity, and I wasn't sore or had any sort of feeling of having overdone it. I really enjoyed that feeling of being fit and trim and able to do things taht I never dreamed of doing.

The most important thing for me is to move more, and more consistently, to get that muscle tone up, and continue living my non-exercising life but being very active physically.

Regain is scary, but I have to focus on it realistically. I might have a few extra pound I must get rid of, but in the grand scheme of things, the 180 lbs between my current weight and max weight is far more impressive than having 8 pounds I need to get rid of to get back to optimal.

I think I may be in the same area as RH is as you are. I can do some exercise, but not too much, too long or too strenuous.
I do great with yoga, or walking, even some weight lifting. I can walk 5 miles fast and be fine. But I better have something to eat or drink (protein shake with some fats and carb)  at the end of my 5 miles walk.  The faster I walk - the worse it may be.

Nuts - or natural nut butters works best for me. I can eat 1 Tbs of natural NSA nut butter before exercise and that will not keep my pouch full - so I will not get nausea from it - but it may keep my BS stable.  I do carry protein bar with me when I exercise. Drinking alcohol the day before - may trigger bad low BS after exercise.

Since I do mostly low carb - my muscles glycogen level is low - and it takes a while to turn fat - protein into blood sugar. Any exercise that will cause rapid blood sugar intake - eventually may cause low BS.
