not all quarters are nice looking ive seen some back yard breeder quarters, make me wanna barf.....

Really depends on what discipline you ride?
Equestrian-Dressage, Jumpers or Hunters- Warmblood, possibly Thoroughbred
    Western Pleasure- Quarter Horse
Trail Riding- Quarter, Freisan, Arab, Pinto, Paint, Appy,

Much easier to find the dapples (grey) in Warmbloods.

    Where do you live now?
I've always loved Palaminos. They're big, but so handsome!
Quarter horses are sweet. They have such a cute personality.

    Ditto Chris!

Ditto on the QH...you cannot go wrong. My most recent was an off-track Thoroughbred and I loved her to death but she was just way too high strung to enjoy her completely.
    Good luck and have fun!

I am a huge animal lover and if ever I had an opportunity to have a horse I NEVER would, the fly problem they bring is horrific.  My friend at work has a boarding stable, I have taken pictures for her, I refuse to go any time except winter as I cannot bare to see the poor things with the flies biting them.  She even has little shin guards to try to protect them, its horrible.  I would totally rethink having horses, it is a ton of work and expensive.  Go take some lessons and see what I mean.
If the flies are that bad, there's something wrong with the stable manager. While some flies are inevitable they shouldn't be THAT bad. And shin guards aren't usually used to protect them from flies. Sounds like they have no pest control going on. Sad.

Don't forget you can also adopt a nice horse, pony or donkey. Check out pet finder . com

I'm with Michele in looking into adoption.  There are SO many horses that had owners that can no longer care for them.  We have so many shelters in my area of the country from KY for saddle racing to my own town for trotters.  I took a couple of thoroughbreds that were on their way to a shelter.  One was in recovery from an accident and the other was retired.  They were best friends aged 10 yrs apart and brought a whole new dynamic.

I'm not a huge appy fan, but...

Fresian are beautiful animals, if your doing dressage or that type of activity. They are pretty pricey.

Thoroughbreds depends on the horse, I've met some that are really high strung, others that were great, and others that were dumb as stumps.

Warmbloods is truely a horse by horse personality. I've loved most of the Arabians (both full and Part)  that I've owned, none of them were "high strung" but I made sure of that before buying them. They are pretty intelligent but they are spirited so if your an absolute beginner than I suggest finding an older horse that is calmer.

Quarter horses - I've loved some, and hated others.

The one thing about horses is that they differ so much in personality traits even with in any certain breed. Depending on your experience level I suggest getting an older horse that's pretty much been there done that and is easier to deal with. If your more experienced a young horse (2 to 6 years of age) still tend to be pretty spirited and it can certainly be a learning experience for both, but can be lots of fun.
