Weight Loss Surgery Directory

Hit the wall, after only 6 weeks?

I had surgery (sleeve) on 5/18. The 2 weeks of pre op liquid diet, I lost 15 lbs. After surgery, within about 2 1/2 weeks, I lost another 20 lbs. Now, it has been over 3 weeks since I've lost a single pound! The dietician at my surgeon's office insists that this is normal and ok. Anyone else experience this? They have tested my thyroid, and the blood work came back normal. And yes...I've been following "the plan." I consume about 500 - 600 calories per day, focusing on protein.
Throw away the scale...you haven't broken anything.

Stalls are normal. You had serious surgery and have been on almost nothing for nutrition since (at least according to your body). It finally decided to play the "OMG what the hell have you done" card and hold on to everything it can...once it decides it's okay, the scale will drop again. EVERYONE hits a stall at about the 3 week mark.

The dietician is right, it is normal.

I had the RNY, so might be different. But MOST people's bodies stop losing for a time after surgery. I call it a reassessment time. The body calls up a full committee of all the parts and pieces, the Fat Cell Bank Manager, the Liver, the Protein Regulator etc. They ha**** out and finally realize they need an action plan to deal with this sudden crisis in "The BODY's" life. Once they're done hashing it out, weight loss recommences.

I lost 25 lbs by day 11. I was still at down 25 pounds on Day 56. I was barely getting in 300 to 500 calories a day. I was not idle, I was working full time from day 14 on.

It's typical and normal for a stall.

A "stall" at this point is inevitable, and here is why.

Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet.

As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.
Stalls are a normal part of the process ... as long as you stick to plan ...eat accordingly and exercise the weight will come off ... the body has to take breaks in between ... don't get discouraged by these... it took just about that long for me to go from 202 pounds to 199 pounds .. onederland toyed around with me and then everything started happening so fast before the year was up I was wayyyyyy below goal .... Just work your journey ... don't compare yourself to anyone ... your journey is unique ... journal everything ... it helps a lot ... do not be discouraged by fluctuations either ... it all works out...

Wishing you nothing but the best on your journey...

Thanks everyone! I'm so happy to hear that I'm "normal."  :)  Best to you all!
Seriously, you haven't read about stalls yet?
You'll have several of these along the next year or so.  Relax and try on a smaller size.  Every time the scale stopped, I needed new clothes.

Seriously, nope! Haven't read about stalls. Though, I did epect them. I just wasn't expecting them to occur just 2 1/2 weeks after surgery. I figured I'd see SOME weight loss...at least somewhat consistant. Guess I was wrong!

Still wearing the same size...but all my clothes fit and look better now :)
