Anyone have surgery in your 50s????

I'm new, pre-op. Prefer the sleeve, still in jumping through insurance hoop mode. Looking at all the forums, there are forums for all ages--20s, 30s, 40s but I didn't see 50s. That scares me. I'm 53. Is it too late for me? Wow, I didn't think I was that old. Advise will be most appreciated.
I am currently 54 and I had gastric bypass (rny) 2 years ago at the age of 52.  I don't think age is a factor in this.  Hope that all of your "hoop jumping" goes smoothly and that you will have your surgery soon.  Good luck!

Dont worry one bit. I am 65, and am four months out from the rouz en y. So happy i did this Between God, and my dr. I am doing well now. Go for it, i did and my life is already better.
Two things:  is that a labradoodle in your avi and I had my band at 60 and might be revising to sleeve at 63....

Empty 11cc band. Fill 8/10/10 3cc Fill 3/1/11 .5cc total unfill 6/12/12 slightly dilated esophagus, 7/17/12 UGI shows improved motility, no dilation. GES 2/21/13 normal, except for food backing up into esophagus,  manometry 4/9/13 severe achalasia, motility 0% consult with Dr Pellegrini 5/30 to determine surgical plan

First, have to say I love  your goldendoodle in your profile pic!  I too have a goldendoodle and love her to pieces!

Most importantly though, congratulations on your decision to change your life.  I am not 50, but darn close (Nov. this year).  I had my surgery less than a year ago.  While I didn't have the sleeve (I had RNY).  I have no regrets - at all!  It is definately not to late for you and you are not that old!  You are going to feel younger than you have in a long time.  Just this past week I was out tubing and teaching my kids to jetski.  I sure wouldn't have been doing that a year ago!  Headed to Cedar Point with the kids and hubby in a few days.  Can't wait!!!  I am having a YOLO summer (you only live once)!  Wait til this time next year and think of all the new things you'll be doing.  No more sitting on the sofa and watching everyone else have fun for me!

    Wishing you the very best!

I hadmy Realize band at 51 which was 3 years ago.

I am one of the younger people in my local support group.

We have many people who are in their 60's and above

Thank you all for your quick responses. After I posted this, I did find the 50s forum. lol
My avi is not a labradoodle but a Komodor. She is 9 years old and weighs 110 lbs. She's my baby. She is a Hungarian guard dog--I keep her clipped because where we live is hot but they do grow long hair which turns into dreg locks. She does not shed either.  I just love her.
I am 56 and was just sleeved on 4 Jun 12 and I know it is the best thing I've done for myself and am looking forward to living the rest of my life.

Surgery 4 Jun 12 Dr Ponce de Leon in Mexico I was down 57 lbs prior to surgery.

    I had surgery @ 55 & then turned 56 2 months post-op!
Love my sleeve & wish I had done this sooner, but got here as fast as I could!!

    Good luck on your journey!

I was 59 having RNY.  By the time I was 61, I kept thinking that the numbers should be reversed.  I looked and felt like 16.  You are young.  If you realized that many people in good health will live to 100 or older, you are only just past your halfway mark.  Make the second half of your life the best.
You are not what you eat, you are what you think.
RNY 10-17-2007.  Currently at goal weight.
Thanks for your responses. When I went to my initial wls seminar, there seemed to be a lot of older folks but then I got scared. 53 is the new 40 now anyway, right??? :)
I had RNY surgery 7 months ago just after I turned 65, and OMG, am I ecstatic about it! I'm down 100+ lobs with absolutely no complications and feel like I'm 30.  Don't let age be your deciding factor; I think I have extended my life by at least 20 years... actually feel like I can live forever!!!
I am 59 years old and had RNY on June 12,2012. I feel great, I have had no problems at all, no nausea, no vomiting, no pain !! I am so glad I had this done !!!

I was 57, almost 58 when I had my sleeve surgery.  I am so happy I had it done.....I think 53 is not too old.

I am so happy you posted this...I think this everyday...but was afraid to ask..lol   I am 57 and planning to have the DS in August. Just hoping I am taking the first step on a new road for a happy, healthier life. Scared but happy, it is such a strange feeling. I have been so happy with my decision until a few days ago and now it seems like everything I have learned in the last 2 years just flew out the window.

Good Luck with the insurance hoops, and you know what they say, "age is just a number".

You need to be happy with your decision although emotions waver so that's probably all that's going on. I've had people that have had complications and had to have added surgery and they said they would still do it again even with the complications. If that doesn't tell us that it's worth it, nothing does.Do you have a date yet? Mine will probably be in late Sept or Oct. My surgeon doesn't do the DS. So I didn't do much research on it. How is it different than the sleeve? I like the sleeve because it is less invasive, if you can say any surgery is less invasive, than the bypass in that they don't reroute the intestines. The left over stomach and reconnection part is what scares me about the rny. Thoughts?
