    Pre-op Testing question

Next week I have to go for the upper GI thing and a colonoscopy the same time. YUCK. I've never had either and I'm nervous. Can anyone help calm my fears???? How is it? What do you have to do? Are you knocked out? How can anyone swallow a tube?
First you will probably be asleep so not to worry about swallowing a tube.

Second you will get to do a clean out.  ENJOY ! ! ! !

You should be fine, but of course, anytime you have anesthesia there is implied risk.

Good luck, will keep you in my prayers.
Upper endoscopy or GI?  I suspect it is an endoscopy since the upper GI my interfere with the colonoscopy when you drink the contrast.  Anyway, last week I had an upper endoscopy and a colonoscopy back to back at the same time.  For the procedures they give you Versed (causes temporary amnesia) and pain medication via an IV.  I had to fast for 36 hours and the night before I drank 2 liters of golytely followed by 10 ounces of magnesium citrate.

I do not remember any of the endoscopy and as soon as it was over the did the colonoscopy.  I remember more of that because the meds wear off quickly and it is pretty easy.  You will be fine.  Just don't make any plans for the evening before your tests as you will want to be close by a restroom at all times.

I had my pre-op testing last wednesday and didn't have to do either of those....just blood tests...EKG....chest x-ray....and pulmonary test (blew into a tube to test my lungs).....i guess it just depends on the surgeon....

I had the same fears you have.....until I had no choice but to have an upper and lower GI.  Trust me.....you just sleep.  You even wonder if they did anything.  You won't remember a thing.  Just will need to get over the groggies.  If the Dr talks to you afterwards, chances are you won't remember that either!  I didn't.  LOL
