Question for the "oldies" about estrogen

I am about 2.5 years out from RNY. I have done wonderfully with minimum problems and would do it again in a heart beat. Up until a few weeks ago I was eating all I could just to keep from losing weight and maintained around 135 for about a year. All of the sudden , within one week, I went from 135 to 141. Then over the next two weeks I have gained three more pounds. That's nine pounds in  three weeks! The only difference I can think of is that my Gyno. DOUBLED my estrogen because of the results of my bone scan. The weight is all in my upper legs, upper arms and waist. I go back to work  next week and I am so scared I won't be able to wear any of my work clothes.
Now, I thinking part of it is water as I have developed some swelling and heaviness in my ankles and that this weight gain is the result of the increase in estrogen
    .
Kinda freaking out here. I can tell a huge difference in my body in just three weeks.

    What do you think?

Water weighs 8.8#/gal. Yes, I do believe some of this could be water weight. Maybe a diuretic? There are OTC products for this, but you mught want to ask your doctor if you have misgivings.
It may be related to the hormones but it's also around the 2-3 year mark where people start to gain (often caled the dreaded "bounceback"). Perhaps your honeymoon period is just now over. I gained 10 pounds right at the 2 year mark and had to work hard to lose them.

Thanks. I am careful to make sure I get between 80 -90 grams of protein a day. More if I can work it in. I know what you mean about the blood work up.

You may be right on track, but because you mention swelling in legs, I want to mention something important that I see here way too often.

Edema in legs, particularly in lower legs or ankles, can be protein malnutrition, which is a big deal. Make sure your doctor runs COMPLETE blood work and checks all protein markers. I have been told we have not had complete labs drawn unless there were 18+ vials of blood drawn. Mine are more like 22.
Some times dingle berries are the lowest hanging fruit.
This is exactly what makes me think it is the estrogen! When I got on Birth control in the eighties, I immediately gained 30 pounds. Then after my hystorectomy/oopherectomy, with HRT another 30. The fact that before the estrogen increase my hips and thighs were smaller than my upper body. Now, in just three weeks, I am the same top and bottom. Breasts are even fuller. ( the only good part)    It is just amazing that it can happen so abruptly. I will call Gyno. today.

    Thanks.

In your case, it does seem to be the estrogen.  I also gained ten pounds between month 30 and month 33 with no changes in diet or exercise. In my case, I am sure it was bounceback. But mine was 3 pounds a month.  This seems way to quick for a bounceback gain.
You are not what you eat, you are what you think.

This is the reason I refuse to take any hormones, my doctor gave me new b/c pills to even out my hormonal issues and I stopped taking them.  Gaining back this weight will make me miserable, way moreso then the hormones could help.  Honestly I won't take anything that is not weight neutral and even then I am super leery.
Spoke to Gyno today. She said that increased estrogen could definitely produce weight gain in those places and to just cut back and let her know if this helps.
