Little nervous about how to prepay for surgery

    Hi.

My surgery is 10/1/12.  I have no more appointments with my surgeon's office before then.  I only have an appointment for my  pre-op testing at the hospital.

Will the hospital tell me what meds I can take up to the surgery?

Does the surgeon have to fill out papers for disability ahead of time?

I feel like I really am not prepared 100% to know what I need to do prior to surgery and after surgery.

Any comments would great - thanks.

Your surgeon should have a patient coordinator to talk to about this.

Your surgeon should tell you about medication.
I woiuld make a detailed list of everything you currently take and get clear instructions about them pre op and post op.

I got a 50 page book from my surgeons coordinator and we went over the whole thing a week before my surgery.

I contacted my HR department about disability and got the paperwork.  I completed my part and took the rest to the surgeons office for them to complete.

You are entitled to all of this info, call and get all of your questions answered by phone or make an appointment to go in person.

your surgeon or the anesthiologist at the hospital should tell you which meds to stop and when preop.

your surgeon should fill out whatever paperwork you need to turn into your work before your surgery and give them to you.

Does your surgeons office have a nutritionist and have you met with them or will you meet with them prior to your surgery, even if you don't meet with the surgeon? have you been given written preop diet/instructions and written post op diet/instructions?

If not,I would be on the phone to my surgeons office to find out when I would be receiving this info or I would be on the phone finding another surgeon who has a better information assimilating  system in place.

    Good luck,

Surgeon should give med directions pre- & post-op.  Some meds need to be discontinued night prior to surgery such as diuretics & diabetes meds) while others may need to be discontinued 2+ weeks prior such as aspirin, other NSAIDS & anti-coagulants.  Contact your surgeon for specific pre-op orders.  Surgeon should give post-op orders at time of hospital discharge.

Not sure what you mean when referring to disability.  Usually surgeon gives recovery direction in discharge orders which gives excuse for leave from work.  If your work needs advance notice for leave, then you will need to have your surgeon provide that documentation pre-op as well.

    Hi there,

I'm pre-op so don't have much to offer you.

Your post is titled "prepay" which people may skip as they think it involves money, as opposed to "prepare".

I'd suggest using the search function, upper right hand corner ... look for "preparing for surgery".

Well, say goodbye to NSAIDs today. They thin your blood, and could lead to bleeding problems during surgery. And remember---after having an RNY, you really shouldn't take them again, EVER.

Which leads me to ask if you've considered the Sleeve. It would leave you with a tiny but fully-functional stomach, far less chance of malnutrition/poor vitamin absorption, and the ability to take NSAIDs. It wouldn't affect your ability to absorb any meds you might ever need, too. Given that you only have 72 pounds to lose, do you RERALLY want to live with a pouch and stoma for the rest of your life?
I'm with MsBatt-with 72 to lose, the sleeve may be a great option.

RNY and DS should only be considered in SMO situations or for diabetes/GERD control (in my humble opinion).
