BURNING MOUTH SYNDROME (BMS)

This month I will be 3 yrs post Roux N Y and lost 160 lbs. I have gained about 25 over the past several months and am working to get most of those off permanently (as permanent as permanent can be!). For about the last 9 months I have had all the awful symptoms of BMS and have been seen by bariatric dr, primary care dr, 2-ENTs, DDS and an endodontist. No one could determine the root of my burning/painful mouth, white spots on tongue, sores on lips, hyperensitivity to spicy/hot foods, chemical/metal/acid tastes in my mouth, etc. I took 3 series of Nystatin and that did not help.

I found an article online about BMS so sent the link to the 1st ENT who said if I wanted to take the anti-anxiety RX mentioned in the article to contact my primary dr. I then went to a 2nd ENT who knew about BMS but did not think it was related to WLS, that it was more likely related to menopause and perhaps some type of hormonal deficiency. He told me to brush w/Biotene toothpaste and use Biotene mouthwash--to avoid caffeine, cinnamon, mint, and spicy foods for 6 wks to see if that helped. I am at about 4 weeks now with no change.

Anyone else have this experience? What have you tried for relief? Is your condition better?

This has been going on much too long ~~P. S. Bariatric (lab) tests all are "normal".

Hi!

I wish I could tell you what causes this, but I just never could figure it out. But, I did have this and it was awful!!! I can tell you what made it heal, though I cannot say it was what " cured" me. I had a mouthwash from my oral specialist guy... Prednisolone (steroid) mouthwa****'s been a couple ..two, three years since any real outbreak. Very occasionally I will get a small sore spot, but I rinse and it's gone.

I wish you luck, I know how you must be suffering.

Peace,
T

Yup I have had the symptoms of severe dry mouth since menopause started last year, at first I thought it was because I was eating lemons all the time, but my doctor said no that it was hormonal. My mouth gets super dry and my lips crack, my tongue hurts, I cannot eat anything remotely spicy.  If I eat too much lemon it kills my tongue.  I guess I have just come to accept it as the new normal.  It does suck.  I cannot eat anything too dry either, or suck on anything dry.  Forget eating cereal or anything rough.  It makes some food taste terrible, I know its made my taste be off.  Honestly I don't do a whole lot to fix it as I do not want to be able to eat more, yeah that sounds ****** up but it is the truth.  My bf keeps saying give up the lemons it will probably solve everything and that is something I cannot do either.

Good Luck.

I don't know if this could be at all related, but i had sores in my mouth, painful "cracks" (that's what they looked like) on my tongue, sensitivity to foods, etc. At first I thought I was eating/drinking too much acidic food but eventually I was diagnosed with severe GERD - to the point that the reflux was washing up into my mouth at night while I was asleep.  I also had a pretty bad ulcer.  Since my doc put me on Nexium 2xday and Carafate, the symptoms have completely gone away.

Don't know if that will help, but thought I'd put it out there.  Hope you feel better soon.

A lady at my office had something that sounds like this, and she has never had RNY as far as I know.  I'll have to ask her about it.

Deficiencies in B vitamins can also cause mouth problems.

  1. I can completely relate. I had the sleeve done in May '22. For the past 6 months or so, I have had a pretty severe burning sensation mostly on my tongue. Labs are normal they said. ???? I'm at a loss as I can't even eat anything remotely spicy or salty because it hurts my tongue so bad. I believe my taste is off due to BMS also. I've spoke with doctors and dentists and because they don't "see" anything on my tongue, they basically disregard it. I feel your pain and I'm sorry you're dealing with it. I've read about it possibly being a B12 deficiency so I started taking additional B12 but haven't noticed a change. I hope someone can give us some answers soon!!
