    Labs before surgery?

    Hi all,
I think I may finally be nearing the end before surgery yipeee! Dr Kemmeter office sent a lab slip into my pcp and I went over them all with my pcp the next day when I had a preop physical. Well today when I got home I had a letter from my pcp saying my B-12 is very low 353 she said that test was not back the day I was in to see her. I have to start 1000 mcg's of sublingual b-12 and she has ordered another lab an MMA, which will have to wait until Monday now. I have yet to hear from Dr Kemmeter office, they probably have not received the reports yet.

Did anyone else have low B-12 before surgery just makes me worry a bit with it being so low before I have had anything done.

Post op you'll want your B12 to be 900-1000 minimally.  Sudden illness and your B12 and vitamin D will drop dramatically.  I take 2500mcg 3-4 times a week and my B12 was at 2000.  You'll only absorb the sublingual form of B12 post op, so continue to take the sublingual form. DAVE

My pre-op blood work uncovered that I was B12 deficient.  Never knew it until then.  Pre-op don't recall if my PCP ever tested me for it.  As a diabetic I had blood work quarterly.  Anyway, I take 1000 mcg/ml (1 cc) of B12 (Cyanocobalamin) in an injection each month.  I can tell when the end of the month (& my B12 level starts to drop) - not quite as much energy.  My surgeon told me that over 30% of US population are either B12 or Vitamin D deficient and never know it since they are not routinely tested for it.  We just chalk up decreased energy to old age / co-morbidities / prescription meds.

    Good luck!

I guess my B-12 had never been tested either, I knew my D was low (30) and that is not so unusual here in Maine we don't see as much sun as most. Time to hit the store. Thanks for your input you two I appreciate it. :)
