Weight Loss Surgery Directory

Well that's that, I'm disqualified xpost

So I had my intro to NUT class today with one of the two dieticians and after class she told me that she wants to focus on diabetes prevention with me and take me out of the screening process.  Her reasons are because she is concerned that I am still nursing my baby, that it's only been 4 months since I had her, and that she wants to make sure that I am focusing on the lifestyle changes and not hung up on my surgery date.

She is concerned that since I was in the ICU so recently (April) and had my daughter that my body needs more time to heal. She told me I needed to wait until I wean my baby at a year before starting the screen again.

    I am so disappointed

    Wow....

At minimum it sounds like she is genuinely concerned about your health and your babies health.  I know it sucks but maybe it is for the best.

I agree. I appreciate it, but it is still dissappointing. I have been hoping to work through the program and nurse her. Then I would get surgery next spring when I was done nursing,

Hearing that I'm out of the screening process until next year really took the wind out of my sails is all. I get it. But it sucks.
She is looking out for you and what's best.  Your time will come but until then take care of you and that bany

    Katie,

I am very new to the site and I understand how you must feel. After all the waiting to here that you have to wait some more. My Mom who is 87 years old always to this very day say's there is a reason for everything. I know for a fact your new baby needs you and your husband loves you for wanting to be the very best you feel you can be. You already are 100 % wonderful on the inside and I am sure on the outside as well. We are harder on ourselves than anyone else and we would never treat others the way we treat ourselves.

Keep your chin up and know that everyone here is thinking of you and when the time is right it will happen.

    Take care,

    Rain
try not to let it get you down, Katie. When I got my referral, because of a shortage of surgeons, I was told it would be 10 months before I had the consult and probably 6 months min before surgery. That was 6 months ago, and I still don't have a consult.

rather than getting annoyed, I decided to focus on all the behaviours and habits I need to change & improve on before having surgery. No one comes to the OR without baggage, but I'm determined to lose as much of it as I can beforehand!

so in addition to taking the classes they will let me take before my consult, and continuing with my therapist, I'm coming here for encouragement and information and have joined a support group started by patients of my bariatric centre.
I'm reading all the "my surgery failed" posts to find common themes/actions so that I can try to beat them, or at least recognize them. I'm journalling my food and trying to increase my exercise. I'm valiantly trying to get over a lifetime of food dislikes to ensure I have the widest option of healthy food choices after surgery. I'm trying to lose weight, but very slowly, mostly just to develop mindfulness and journalling patterns. I'm planning my meals in advance so I don't make bad decisions out of hunger.

(sorry, my tablet bugged out and I had to submit too soon)

its not easy seeing people here get their surgery before me, especially those who have been on this path a shorter time. But I think this long wait time is going to give me what I need for success.  As I was told by a bariatric medicine doctor (not a surgeon), developing strong habits before surgery is the best predictor of long term post surgical success!

you can learn a lot in this time- learn how to help control your diabetes while cooking meals for your family (the diabetes diet is usually healthy for all) - many diabetes related tips will transition into your post WLS cooking. Learn about your unique issues and relationship to food, and how to control it. And so on.

then, when your daughter is weaned you can go thru the process with more knowledge and confidence, and months of practice!

Thank you for all the encouragement. I plan to use the rest of my time I have in this life well. My husband and I are beginning meal planning and cutting out empty calories like in soda.

I am very hopeful for this journey of mine.
I am so sorry, i would be devasted even though it is for the best.  Be with your little one, i think your idea about the behavioral changes is really good.
It doesn't sound like you are disqualified to me.  It sounds like the qualification process is temporarily on hold...you've been delayed, not permanently disqualified.  Hang in there and time will pass quickly and you will get the surgery.

People have had weight loss surgery while breastfeeding. I don't think they should disqualify you for that. The process to actual get to your surgery date can take months, by than your baby will be eating other foods and your body will not be needing to make as much milk. Is this the onlly surgical group you can go to?
