Hair Colouring or not

Hi folks. My hair is thinning out quite a lot, pretty much on schedule, 3 months post surgery. I have a great wig that I can wear if I lose a lot more. In the meantime, under 'normal' conditions, I'd be getting my hair colour redone every few weeks (I'd be naturally very grey, but my hairdressers have kept my brown colour with highlights). I suspect I should avoid the chemicals that come with hair dyes, but my hair is beginning to look pretty faded and pathetic. It seems my choices (while I still have some hair) are to not consider re-colouring and look rather faded and not my best; to colour and risk other damage or an acceleration of hair loss; or to wear the wig a lot more than I intended at this stage. I'm not actually vain -but my body is looking terrific, which is lovely after years of not looking great; and also, I'm moving home  and job just after new year, across the other side of the continent and want to start off looking good. Thanks - looking forward to the wisdom that comes from all you guys out there!

Colouring your hair will make no difference to its health - bleaching may - but most hair colourants have fantastic conditioners in them and make our hair appear thicker and glossier - what's not to love about that?

I will only stop doing my hair when I'm dead - it makes me look and feel good!

Color is fine, really.  Have you tried highlights instead?  I can go for months in between highlights because my hair blends in and you don't see the roots.  either way you're good to go.

Coloring hair is a great way to make it appear a bit thicker. Any permanent hair color causes at least minor changes in the outer structure of the hair itself, so that it basically "fluffs up" the cuticle of the hair. This = thicker appearance. I colored my hair for years, and one of the biggest reasons was that the process actually makes my hair more manageable (I have a lot of hair, but the individual strands are very thin). The hair loss is coming from your follicles going into a resting phase, hair dye won't do anything to accelerate that. Hair loss due to coloring is from overprocessing, which causes the hair to become brittle and break.

Obligatory disclaimer: Not a hair colorist, but my best friend has been one for many years.

I agree with the others, color away there is no reason to stop coloring it and I used to be a licensed beautician. It will five your hair more fullness.

Coloring is fine, I wouldn't bleach it though and wear the wigs while its short, that's what I did, I had tons of cute wigs because I found my short hair boring during the fall out phase, which lasted for years with me because I had plastics also that caused loss.  My profile pics have lots of wig pics.

I haven't had surgery yet - but I already have thin hair and considered a wig -- but I can't even find a hat that fits,  Where do you find wigs for "fatheads" like me??  Did you get you wig through a catalog - if so, info please.  What size wig?  Real hair or synthetic?  Cost?

Any info would be appreciated - I'm afraid I'll end up bald!

Thanks for any input.

I live in Australia, and through the web found a wig shop near me, but I have seen that there are lots of online wig sources. My wig is synthetic; it's a "Raquel Welch Winner", and cost around AUD$400-around US$370. I'm starting to wear it a bit now, and feedback is great. Even when some friends from church laid hands on me (on my head) the other day, they didn't pick that my hair was actually a wig! I showed them afterwards (I'm being really open about this journey). I like the idea of getting a few wigs. I'm also going to go ahead with getting my hair recoloured, so that my natural hair is as good as it can be. This is actually fun - RNY surgery has a host of mixed blessings! (Here's a good game to play: find the blessing or gift in hair loss or strictures, or regurgitating.....)

I would use a color that is not permanent hair color. It may not last as long as the other colors that have chemicals in them like peroxide.I would talk to your hair dresser to see if there are any other options out there.I know QVC has some colors that are powder that cover your roots.
