Biting my nails!

No, seriously...I'm a nail biter, since I was 15 months old. I am scheduled for surgery Dec. 31 and it JUST NOW occurred to me that I won't be able to bite my nails after this surgery. How did that slip by me?  Well, I know the answer to that--I bite my nails constantly, to the point that I no longer have nails on some fingers. Seriously, most of the nails are no longer than 1/4", at most. Some are bare nailbed. The weird thing is, I hardly even know I'm doing it. It's such an automatic, in-grown behavior I'm not even aware of it, usually.

Geez, this looks like it could be a hurdle...

I can still bite my nails, why would you think you couldn't?

Well, I'm thinking because I chew up the nails and swallow them...I know it's nasty. I know. I just have never been able to stop biting.

Well, actually, no I have never thought to talk to anyone about it because it never bothered me. I mean, it has always just been sort of a "comfort" for me. If you have never been a nail-biter, then you probably can't understand it. You look at it and are repelled--and I get that. I do. But i am not repelled, i am comforted.

Just writing that down makes me see how skewed my thinking is...hmmmm....

Don't get me wrong. i bite my nails too and have for many years but when you eat them then that's something completely different.  I realize that it comforts you but there have got to be some healthier ways to get that same feeling. I would be concerned about ruining your pouch or getting an infection post op

That stuff didn't even slow me down. The one thing that worked years ago was artificial nails. But that was back when I still had over 1/2 the nail left on each finger.  There's nothing to stick a nail onto now. If I could stop biting for about 2 weeks, maybe the nails would grow long enough for me to try acrylics again.

Interestingly, I have never been sick from biting my nails. In fact, i rarely get sick at all.
