If anyone has any suggestions of why I can't seem to get an Avatar to load... I feel I've tried everything and I still just get errors. I am frustrated. If there is a helpful hint or a secret someone feels may help.. please share!

Sin Kim is correct, you need to make sure it's the correct size. You did not mention what error message you were getting.  Here is a tutorial that shows you how to resize your photo.
