Constant runny nose...

I'm 10 months out and I have firmly convinced that this is a side effect of surgery.  I've never struggled with allergies (and it's still frickin' winter here in the midwest) but since my VSG surgery, every time I eat - regardless of how much or how little - I have to blow my nose.  Sometimes it's even after I drink something.  It's been relentless and my upper lip is constantly chapped.  I will go through a small box of kleenex in a week, easily.

Somewhere I read that the vagus nerve runs through the stomach (is this even true?) and that after surgery it gets easily stimulated and that can cause the nose to run.  I know that a runny nose can be a sign of "too full" but this is ALL. THE. TIME.

Anyone else have this happen?  Anyone know a medical explanation for WHY it's happening?  I'm all ears....

My Vagus nerve was damaged during Lap Band surgery and I have had major problems ever since. (And I had the band removed almost 9 years ago!) Runny nose, "machine gun sneezing" which causes me to pass out at times... all due to the damage to the Vagus nerves. If you Google Vagus nerves, tons and tons will come up. Those nerves really control a lot.

I take allergy medication and it helps a little.

I have it and it seems like I make way too much saliva all the time too. Haven't been able to find a reason why,all my drs are stumped. My Pcp have me a nasal spray called ipratropium bromide. It has helped more than anything else I have been given.

I also snort and sniff and have to clear my throat way too much. Feels like I have to blow but there is not much to. Blow ,or sniff and sniffing does no good.

pain In the ass.....

if allergy meds help you - it may be allergy you developed after WLS.

I have my nose running when I get full..

I have my nose running for a week after I eat any dairy.. (I developed dairy allergy after my RNY)

I get itchy and get urticaria if i eat soy...

and so on...

I developed food allergies - intolerance- after WLS..

Thanks for this info.  I'm going to start tracking what I eat in relation to the runny nose and see if I can connect some dots.

I'm nearly 10 years out and my nose still runs - not all the time, but a lot of the time - I do believe it's related to the vagus nerve and nothing to do with allergies or what or how I eat.  It seems to be random at this point - and I also get chapped lips and a sore nose but I put that partly down to living at altitude!   Maybe my nose would run more if I lived anywhere else LOL!
