Lap-band bound

Finally decided last week that the lap band surgery is the best thing for me. I called to make my Dr appointment but they are getting back to me on Monday. I heard the good the bad and the ugly about weight loss surgery. If anybody has some good advice or encouragement I'd greatly appreciate it :) not to sure how I feel right now, I am excited to get the surgery but its like I'm a little scared in the same sense not about complications but about the (if I have success) part. I've been on a diet practically my whole life, always been over weight. You name it I've trued it to lose weight. So I guess I'm nervous that its going to be another failed attempt. But I'm really trying to stay positive. I have really high hopes and myhubby is being very supportive which helps a lot. :)

What made you choose the lap band over the other available options?

It seems the safest. I'm to scared to do the other surgeries.

You might consider checking out the lap band forum -- http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/lapband/ -- the complication rate is actually pretty high which, in my opinion, makes it the least safe of the four common options.

I'll check it out. Thank you. I know other people who have had the other surgeries and has had nothing but problems and had gained quite a but of weight back. I guess I'm thinking in my mind I feel as if it didn't work or I had to many problems I could always just take it out. Have you had any of the surgeries done?

You can... but sometimes it causes permanent damage that can't be reversed.

Sadly, while the device can be removed, the damage it does can often be permanent - such as erosion into the esophagus.

I had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

I HAVE had the band and had it removed after 7 years, this past July.  While I did lose a lot of weight, after vomiting my way through like I was bulimic, I gave up on it and gained all the weight back plus some.  That was my fault! But where I once thought it was a great procedure, I now know it is a waste of time and money. The cost of having a fill (adjustment) or unfill without insurance , for me, was $250.00 a pop!

I do NOT recommend it for anyone except those who need to lose 50-90 pounds slowly.  And even at that, I would be hard pressed to recommend it to anyone. But, there are those who have had great success and would do it again.  You need to research them all.

What makes you think it's the safest?  It has such a high complication rate and most people need a second surgery in less than 10 years to remove or replace the band.

Did you research the stats on complications?

I've done some research. And I've went to the seminars. I'm new to this whole thing. It seemed the safest to me because there would be no cutting on the actual stomach or rerouting of the intestines. That seems pretty scary to me :/
