Fear of Failure

Hello! I'm sure this topic has been addressed before but forgive me, I'm new and still learning how to navigate the website.

Anyway, I'm scheduled to have my gvs 10/3/2014 (originally 10/2/2014 but was pushed back a day) I just found out last Friday and I'm going to have the surgery a week from then! I have a surgeon who does not require the 2 week pre-op diet but I've decided I'm going to begin one 3 days before my procedure. After the initial excitement and giddiness from being approved wore off, a sense of fear came over me. "What if I fail"? What if I can't follow the rules and regain the weight"? My fear stems from choosing surgery as my last option and I'd hate to think that I'd go through all this and not succeed. I know it's a possibility but I'm trying to remain optimistic and give it my all.

Did anyone else feel like this? Or do you feel like this at the moment? What has helped you succeed? Or get pass these feeling? I know it's a loaded question but any advice or thoughts will be appreciated.

Thank you!

JG

It is scary.  I had mine 9/5/2014 (rny).  But not to worry, this is an incredible tool to get you on the path to getting much better.  Follow the rules your doctor sets for you and you will succeed.  Stay in touch with your support folks/ groups.  They are so important.  I find myself looking at this site several times a day and it helps to find out that others are experiencing most if not all of what I am.  Good luck going forward!

I think everyone fears failing. I think it's because we have failed so many times in the past. Slow and steady wins the race... right? Just have to keep doing what you are supposed to do. Good Luck!

Yes NYMom222, that is exactly it. We've failed so many times in the past and this time it's no different. I'll remember slow and steady wins the race! I'd rather try than not at all. I love the quote, "Losing weight is hard. Maintaining weight is hard. Staying overweight is hard. Choose your hard". This journey will be hard and I will probably have set backs but I know it will all be worth while. All the best to you too.

Hi

I'm having my surgery Monday Oct 6th.  I feel exactly the way you describe it.

All Dr's have there own set rules for their patients to follow and they might be similar or very different.  That's why you read, "follow your Dr's plan for you it will work."  I myself had a pre-op 3 week liquid diet of protein shakes up to 800 calories a day, that also included decaf coffee & tea, sf popcycles, sf jello, sf drinks, milk, water & broth.  No food.  I can finally see that light at the end of the tunnel and keep repeating to myself "You've got this" and then I list the reasons I'm having this surgery and what it can do for me health wise and happiness wise.  I have worked toward this since Oct 4, 2013 and it hasn't always been easy.  I'm am willing to give up quantity for quality it is just going to take some time.  Seriously, I think we all think about what if I fail, but I am trying to set myself up to succeed by listening to the vet's and of course my Dr.

Good luck and healing vibes coming your way, You've got this Your gonna love the loser's bench let us know how it goes

Congratulations Bubbles314! I think it's a very good idea for me to also write down the reason I am having this surgery to remind myself. You've definitely worked hard to get here and I'm wishing you the best on the 6th!

Thanks!

YES, I know this fear so well.  You are not alone.  I've seen both of my parents regain weight after their RNYs...so I'm extra scared about it.  I am hopeful that I will learn from them and use this tool to the best of my ability.  You've got this!!!
