How will I survive Thanksgiving 9 days post op?

I had my RNY on the 18th and am on a two week liquid diet. I have survived making the stuffing for the turkey and homemade macaroni and cheese. I don't know how I'm going to make it through tomorrow without one bite!  I'm trying to tell myself it's just one day on my lifelong journey but it seems so darn depressing right now.

Honestly? I would have excused myself. Which would have meant rescheduling thanksgiving altogether since I'm the host for my family!  I know myself and it would have been entirely too taxing for me to have dealt with so soon after surgery.

Next year you will be eating a sensible portion of Thanksgiving dinner (perhaps with a few adaptations or eliminated items) and more than likely 100 pounds less. Keep that in mind.

I remember sitting on my bed on July 4th 2006 crying (not just tears, this was full on ugly crying LOL) as the smell of BBQ came through the open window. I was eating mashed carrots with unflavored protein powder (I do not recommend this) and there it was steak... and the floodgates opened. The following year... small piece of steak, grilled corn, fresh picked from the garden tomatoes and more than 125 pounds at that time down. It was worth one 4th of July suffering... next year will be worth this Turkey Day.

Best to you,

Have your shakes or whatever as planned.

Use sugar free mints to keep your mouth busy.

Ask for help to prepare so you are not alone with the food.

Sit at the table and have your water or shake, enjoy the company and INSIST that others clean up.

Give away or throw away leftovers if they are going to be a problem for you.

Thanksgiving dinner is ONE meal ... You can do this!!!

Okay Eggface just described me to a T last night. I was doing the ugly crying because I will not be able to eat anything from the thanksgiving table this year. As Gwen said - I have excused myself and will be spending today by myself for a few hours - it's just another day :) you can do it!

I had my surgery on New Years Eve last year. That meant my pre-op was over Thanksgiving and Christmas (5 shakes a day only) -- and I remember that it was tough.  But, in a way, I felt like if I could do that then I could handle anything over the next year. I felt strong and determined. Today I am 165 lbs less than I was last Thanksgiving.

It's worth it.

I'm in the same boat.  Ten days post-op.  And I PLANNED it this way, dammit! What was I thinking?  But we'll get through it.  It's one year.  And as someone said above, if we can make it through this, we can do ANYTHING!!!!
