Pre-Op Weight Loss

I am in month 5 of my 6 month supervised program for WLS.  I find the classes and this forum extremely helpful.  I am, however, a little nervous as my 6 months are almost up and I have not lost nearly any weight.  By the 6 months, I may be at a 10 lb loss max.  Has anyone had any problems with insurance approval or your surgeon due to low weight loss BEFORE surgery?  The goal set at the beginning of the program was 20 plus pounds.  HELP!

My insurance only required that I didn't gain any weight.

I doubt you'll get any hassle over it, but use this experience as a source of insight to make sure you're getting the right wls procedure.  The VSG and LapBand are both restriction-only, which is what you are doing right now but with decreased capacity you would feel satiety faster.  You may get similar results.  The RNY and DS both have restriction and malabsorption that really kicks your metabolism in the pants and gets it moving.  I hope you're looking at those, because it looks like that's what your body needs.

My insurance required the 6 mo supervised diet and a 10 lb weight loss. I lost 16 lbs by the 3rd month, but then gained almost all of it back by the end of the 6 months. I was so worried that I would be denied, but my insurance approved it. I guess they saw that I did lose some weight and that was good enough. I have medicaid. Your insurer might have stricter requirements. Good Luck!

If your surgeon required you to lose 20 pounds, he may not operate until you do. My insurance required a 6 month supervised diet but did not require a loss.

imo you'll be fine. you've given honest effort and for goodness sakes you've lost some weight. and you're having wls to lose weight. why you should be required to lose more atm without surgery would imo be ridiculous. stand up for yourself and good luck to you :)
