Post-op 2 yrs out or more . . . . any regrets?

In the early stages of considering WLS (again!) and curious as to whether most people a. have no regrets about their surgery b. have serious regrets about their surgery or c.  are happy they had the surgery, but have some regrets.

It is such a major decision, and I'd like to get more information as to whether people who have been living with it for a couple years still feel like it was the right call for them.  I recognize this will be different for everyone.

Thanks!

No regrets whatsoever... I used to regret not having surgery earlier but really I believe there is a time for everything and perhaps I wouldn't have been as successful or committed to changing my life when I was younger.

8 1/2 years, maintaining 158-ish (depending on time of month) weight loss, zero complications, all co-morbidities resolved: severe GERD, High BP, sleep apnea) from 28 some 30-32 to size 4 pants.

Best wishes in your research and in whatever decision you end up making. You are welcome to read my blog (link in signature) I've documented my journey pretty consistently. Hope it helps.

Shortly before my surgery, I talked to my friend who is two years out, and this is what she told me: In the months following the surgery, she would have said don't do it. She had complications and ended up back in the hospital several times. But after two years, she says it was all worth it, and she was so happy that I was going forward with the surgery. I does take time to adjust, and I am still working on that. But seeing how it has changed her life and how happy she is makes me believe I made the right decision.

I developed some long term complications... Including severe food allergies... If I ever works do it - I would choose VSG and not RNY..

I'm 9+ years post op from the duodenal switch and still quite pleased with my life and the results.

My biggest piece of advice is to learn all you can about the three mainstream procedures right now, the RNY (gastric bypass), VSG (sleeve) and DS (duodenal switch).  Compare what you learn to your own physiology and how your body reacts to your weight loss attempts in the past and find your perfect match.  Each procedure attacks obesity differently, which is good because we are not obese for the same reasons.  Doing this kind of research will lessen your chances of regrets.

Now, if you really want to see some who have had disappointments, go up to the Forums section at the top of your screen and find the forums dedicated to "WLS Regrets"  "Failed WLS" and "Revsion Weight Loss Surgery Forums"

Please listen to Valerie, she speaks the truth. Go to those forums to continue your research. It's very important to see which types of surgeries tend to seek revisions and which types have the most complications.

No regrets! This surgery saved my life and I am sure I would not be here today if I had not lost over 200 pounds.

I am coming up on 8 years out, and I don't regret having had WLS at all.  I wish I had been able to have it years earlier!  I will say, though, that if I were making the decision today, instead of 8 years ago (when the sleeve wasn't an option), I would opt for the VSG rather than the RNY. The lifetime of vitamin malabsorption and strict prohibition on NSAIDs (not to mention the potential for developing reactive hypoglycemia and the increased chances of kidney stones) just isn't worth the 18 months of temporary caloric/fat malabsorption.

Had some serious late term complications. Would I do it again, in a heartbeat. Would I still pick the bypass? Sure would!!
