Exercise and Weight Gain

This subject comes up a lot, and I thought people would be interested in this article. In brief, it is about runners training hard for a marathon, and GAINING weight, rather than losing. Apparently it's a well-recognized issue in the running world.

Exercise is great, and if you are a runner, I tip my cap to you. But if you want to control your weight, it will always be about how much you eat.

Yep!

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

It is always amusing to me to read posts from people who SWEAR they burn 5000 calories a workout and therefore can eat 5000 extra calories. Then they are SHOCKED when they gain.

The whole concept of eating back exercise calories hurts a lot of people. It might be ok for a professional athlete, but not for the obese.

Yeah... Those magical, 3000-calorie-burning Zumba classes are my favorite....

I agree!  I don't even pay attention to the calorie burn information my various trackers give me.

I have a friend who always complains to me about not losing weight and talks about how she needs to start exercising.  I think she'd be better off cutting out her Mt Dew habit :P  And stop rewarding the exercise she does get with pizza!

That's really a great article.  I always chuckle when people I don't know very well see me and are surprised at my weight loss ask me if I've been exercising.  Everyone thinks it's the ticket to thinness.

Yes, you still get people posting that exercise us ESSENTIAL. Let no-one deny it is healthy! But is is a very small part of weight loss. And people do over-estimate the calories burned

There used to be a guy on here who said he burned 4000 calories per day on his bike ride - I wonder where he is today?   I guess quite a few pounds heavier than he was when he started his bike riding!
