Hi,

One of my seniors advised me to try yoga as you can lose extra weight naturally by practising yoga. I was just wondering if anybody else has tried Yoga for weight loss and been successful? Which Yoga poses suits for weight loss?

Thanks!

I cannot see how yoga could possibly contribute to weight loss from a physical standpoint.  There is no physical position that is magically going to make you burn more calories!  The only way yoga might help with weight loss is in a case where someone is stress eating and yoga helps them relax and they eat less.

Even with WLS, weight loss comes down to one thing (as it always has): eating fewer calories than you burn.  Exercise that doesn't burn any significant number of calories will not contribute to that deficit.

As Lora said, weight loss comes down to calorie control. That said, I am a big advocate of anything that increases activity. If you enjoy Yoga, then do it!! I would think that the biggest benefit of yoga would be increased core strength. Look for poses that will strengthen muscle while your losing weight.

Yoga is awesome when you're losing weight since it gets your body working better, helps alignment and flexibility, but no exercise is going to make you lose weight. That's what diet is for.

Yoga is great for flexibility, it may even help tone muscles and mindfulness.  I would say it would be a great addition to an workout routine
