Is there anyone who has developed low ferritin and peripheral neuropathy long term post gastric bypass?  I believe there might be a relationship.  My ferritin was recently found to be 4 but because I was not anemic, none of the doctors checked this and when they did they did not understand that ferritin below 40 meant iron deficiency.  Curious if anyone else can relate.

I was told to take a variety of easily digestible iron supplements occasionally by the vets .They told me that  Elemental iron , the usual iron supplement is not digested properly  by post bariatric patients.

So far so  good five years post op .. and i ALWAYS had anemia as a child and young adult because I sleeve most meats .

Iron deficiency causes low energy (((())))  hope yours get s better soon.

Low ferritin numbers are fairly common after RNY.  Some of us just don't absorb iron orally.  With a ferritin of 4, you will not get your numbers up without infusions.  Get a referral to a hematologist  ASAP. You will feel SO much better.

I have had several infusions, and will have to have them periodically for the rest of my life..  I take oral iron supplements ( 120 mg Elemental Carbonyl Iron w/ Vit C) daily to slow the downward spiral after an infusion.  It's been two years since my last infusion.  I will probably need another one in the spring.  My doctor prescribes an infusion when my ferritin hits 50 (below 50 we start to get symptomatic).  She said that there is not good reason to allow my numbers to get so low that I feel like crap.

I have never had peripheral neuropathy and my ferritin numbers were also in the single digits. I did have severe episodes of restless leg syndrome and fatigue.

You need to get a hematologist.  Peripheral neuropathy is a symptom of B12 deficiency - what are those numbers?  As Rocky says above, you need iron infusions.

It worries me to see surgeons and PCP's making these health decisions when it's not their area of expertise.

At five years out, I think I could as long term post op...  After reading this I now realize that the numbness in my toes is related to this! I will clear this through my doc, but I have had numb toes for ages.  I had blood work done in June and began taking Feramax capsules to replace my usual iron supplement because it was in the tank.  My doc wanted me to take shots, but I am rather averse to painful needles and I committed to double my iron intake until my rather low numbers (7) increased.  I increased my B12, started taking vitamin C, and B6.  I suddenly feel like super woman and I am only at 23. And I just noticed that my toes are not numb.  Coincidence?  I think not.

Incidentally, I don't get backed up with Feramax the way I did with regular iron supplements and that is a definite bonus.  It's not cheap, but totally worth it if you ask me.

I did refer myself to a hematologist and am in the process of iron infusions.  My B 12 is in to 600's.  Recently started taking Vitamin C.  None of the doctors relate the low iron to my peripheral neuropathy by I think they are wrong./  Thanks to all for your responses.

I would increase my B-12 if my level were 600. Many of us here feel better when it is 1000+.
