For those of you that had VSG in Mexico - did  you tell your primary care doc before or after your surgery?

I told her afterwards, and she was delighted and totally on board.  (I only told my sister beforehand, and it happened that we ended up having dinner the night before my flight to San Diego, so that's when I told her.)  My PCP has been willing to order whatever labs I need, etc.  Very supportive, and of course tickled pink with my continued maintenance.  It's a joy these days to have a checkup.  THAT was an unexpected NSV, haha!

I told my doctor before I went because I wanted to make sure he'd do my follow ups for me after surgery. Luckily, he was completely on board with my decision to go to Mexico.

Tell them now. You aren't asking for permission. You're announcing a decision. They can help.

Tell your PCP now. You definitely want to make sure you have a doctor willing to take care of any issues or just general follow-up here. My PCP will take care of labs and such but she wasn't on board with any other follow up care. In fact, if we didn't have such a good relationship, I'm not sure she'd even do my labs.

Tell your PCP now. If he/she is an ass about it, it gives you a month to find a new one. There are many bariatric friendly PCP's out there.

My PCP is very proud of me and my commitment to my weight loss. He knows that weight loss surgery is the best option for those of us who have struggled with obesity.

I would tell my PCP before.  I would also make sure I had follow up care arranged before leaving to have surgery out of the country.
