Initial Impression and Question

When I first posted here last week, I had pretty high expectations after hearing about this site from a nurse.  When I made my initial post, there were only a few people who didn't downright slam and criticize me for going what the surgery my surgeon feels is best for me.  I know people have each had different experiences, but when it comes down to a huge medical decision, I'm going to trust the opinion of the surgeon I chose and his team.  If I didn't trust him, I wouldn't have chosen him.  He has a superior reputation in this field.  I can appreciate others sharing their opinions, but what I read was downright nasty.  It has made me re-consider my activity on this site.  I want to give it another chance, although fear this post may bring out the worst in people.

If anyone has gotten as far as this, I have a question: did anyone find the first few days of the pre-op liquid diet incredibly difficult?  I started yesterday (for surgery on 4/26) and was super cranky.  I.Want.To.Chew!  I do have my calcium supplements to chew and I will be making Jell-o, but right now?  Boo!

Thanks.

Thank you so much, Liz.  I'm eager to follow your journey, also.  We're so close in dates that we're like WLS twins!  (what surgery are you having?)

Hubby went to the supermarket to get broth and Jell-O so I'm hoping this will get easier.  I'm thinking it's just because it was the first day and is HUGE deal since it's the first life change in this journey.  Please let me know how you're doing!!

Sorry, I didn't notice that it was VSG.  I didn't pay close enough attention when I read your post to your signature.  Yep, VSG twins :)

Friendly advice from someone who's been here 13 years or so.  Let it go ...   unless you want to make enemies, chastising people when you are a newbie never goes well.

I read your previous posts and only saw people concerned for you.  You really come across as if you are spoiling for a fight!

I wish you luck on your journey

A fight was not at all my intention.  I guess I more wanted to let people know how they come across (some people, not all).  I think it was that it was the same thing repeated over and over and over that has me so upset.  I don't know how else to say that I appreciate the concern, but trust my medical team.  I got frustrated with having to try to come up with polite ways to say that.  I'm the last person to pick a fight - to fight at all (just ask my therapist), but I felt attacked.  I thought I'd say my peace and now that can be that.

Thank you.

Please understand that its a forum & what you might see as an attack, others won't see it like that at all. Things are very interpretive here to some extent. One can say 1 thing & the other can hear something else. Miscommunication can & does happen.

I'm guessing you're talking about the sleeve & gerd reminder posts. Just keep in mind people don't always look at every response others have given you b4 they post a response to you. So you might hear the same thing over n over.

Also keep in mind that you don't have to defend your position over n over. You can take or disregard any advice given, especially when it doesn't help/apply to your situation.

Sorry for the long response, I never seem to keep it short & sweet.

While replying to everyone is polite, it's perfectly fine to just say thank you for your post.

Weight loss surgery is a huge cash cow to a general surgeon and more often than you want to hear, they do the surgery that suits them, not you!  Going to medical school shows you're smart, not kind.

Personally, if I had GERD I would never have a VSG, we see too many people revising to RNY after a year or two because they have developed Barretts.  We really do have YOUR best interests at heart, but at the end of the day, this is your surgery and so your choice.  At least now you are going into it with all the information.

So true!! Sadly surgeons do not always have our best interests at heart. VSG is easier and quicker for surgeons to perform. They can make much more money pushing VSG.

People are told "how they come across" frequently here. It's ALWAYS by people who are new to the forum and haven't read many previous posts, and often by those who have no interest in legitimately constructive feedback.

Imagine going to a hockey game for the first time when you know NOTHING about hockey, then freaking out when the players slam into each other. "How dare they try to hurt each other! Everyone needs to skate carefully. What the players are doing is wrong, and I'm going to tell them to their faces!"

Same deal.
