has anyone tried to ease into the pre op diet ahead of the 2wks prior to surgery?. I'm trying to do only protein shake and liquids for breakfast trying to get myself mentally capable of tackling that phase. Am I crazy?

No, you aren't crazy. I don't think it's necessary -- in fact, drinking protein shakes has enough time devoted to it, that I can't see adding more to it -- but it certainly won't hurt anything if it is something that helps you to prepare.

I know that when we are preparing for surgery -- the whole pre-op diet and then the first weeks afterwards seem so daunting! But truthfully, they are such a small blip on the radar of the entire picture. The great majority of the time is really spent figuring out how to really change our relationship with food while taking greatest advantage of the tool we are gifted. Most successful vets center their diet around dense proteins for both losing and maintenance -- really for life.

Again, if it helps you to prepare -- then by all means, do it! I wish you success.

Thanks. I'm looking at it more as a learning tool. How can I learn to deal with the cravings and self talk that come up now to be better prepared when I don't have lunch time to look forward to. Plus I've started working with my therapist trying to figure out what exactly I tell myself when I do make bad choices. I'm trying really hard to not treat this time as a free for all eating fest.

I agree with what Kat said too.

I felt the same as you. I started doing just a protein shake for breakfast a couple of months before surgery. It helped me get a good running start before I got wheeled into the OR.

But I can see where it would make some folks start climbing the walls, too. If it's an issue, don't bother with it. If you do it and are happy with it, it that's great.

My surgery was mid-March 2014. In January 2014 I started replacing "meals I ate alone" with protein shakes. So this ended up being 90% of my breakfasts and lunches. It worked well for me and was good for adjusting my mindset.
