Benadryl & Weight Gain

I have been taking benedryl (about 5-6 of them....I know) to fall asleep every night for the last year. I have pretty bad insomnia.

Two weeks ago I stopped taking them and switched to a very low dose of seroquel (25mg) to sleep. I have noticed I have lost 10 pounds since stopping benedryl.

Anyone else have experience with weight gain & antihistamines? I thought it was interesting.

I have not noticed this, but I'm really glad you've stopped taking so much Benadryl since studies show it can really **** you up in older age.

I am about to turn 25 and even now it is starting to mess me up. My memory has gotten bad and my mood and energy level are always are 0%. Feel so much better now!

I'm thinking some well-needed sleep may have awakened your metabolism.

Oh wow, that is way over the max dose of Benadryl. 50mg is the highest I've seen given at one time, which is 2 tabs of the over the counter stuff. Histamine is a natural appetite suppressant that our body produces. Benadryl is an antihistamine, so yes, taking Benadryl all the time could likely lead to weigh gain.

LOL. You must not have worked ED.

But you're right, that's a helluva lot of Benadryl, and certainly shouldn't be taken at those dosages except under a physician's order.

I take 75mg at a pop, but that's after decades of tolerance building, AND it's at a physician's direction, AND I end up needing it about 1-2x a month as part of an emergency migraine ****tail.

No never the ER. I worked telemetry during my time at the hosp. I've never seen 75mg though. Rarely 50. Mostly 25. Now I'm in an administrative role for a home care agency. I love it.

I just left my job with a home health company, though I am a CNA until I go into nursing school. Don't know much about the administrative side, but I really disliked home health overall. There are some of my patients who I adored, but I often got sent to very wealthy places with people who do not need any help and are looking to get their insurance to cover a cook and a maid basically. I am asked by my company to lie on the documentation and mark that I have done things that I did not do. I told them I refused and to please not send me to any home like that again. Luckily I had a few full time patients *****ally needed my help *****fused anyone but me, so I got to stay very busy even though my company wasn't all that thrilled with me.

Oh wow, well that is against the law AND Medicare fraud so glad you didn't bend on that. Home care isn't for everyone, and then working for a company like that certainly couldn't have helped. When I was in the field I loved the autonomy. I was very independent, and didn't feel like management was breathing down my neck. Plus I made significantly more than when doing floor nursing. I don't know if it's what I want to do forever, but for now it's a job.
