A bit about me....

SW 259

CW 169

GW 155-160

So...Yesterday I had my 1 year follow-up with the NUT and Nurse. I was so excited to go and so disappointed things took a turn in the wrong direction.

My NUT started by congratulating me on my loss and then went on to ask me how I felt. I told her I was very happy with my results so far and am working very hard to get rid of my last 10 lbs. OMG the look on her face was unreal. She went on and on about how she thinks I've done well and how I'm putting too much pressure on myself and how I should seek help and she thinks I may have an eating disorder.....WTF??? Am I wrong here trying to get to 155-160? I'm not saying I want to be 100 pounds and in no way shape or form am I depriving myself of nutritious foods. We even went through my food journal and she said it all looked great. I'm eating 900-1000 calories a day and eating balanced macros, 40% Protein, 25% fat & 35% Carbs. She suggested several times that I speak to the social worker or seek help to help me come to terms with my weight.

The appointment with the nurse went well, they took my blood and am waiting for those results.

I don't know what to think here....am I being unreasonable trying to get to 155-166lbs? I'm 5.5"

I wouldn't think that's unreasonable unless you're being unhealthy or obsessive about it, which it doesn't sound like you are. Heck, I'm 5'9" and many tables say that I should weigh what you're looking at as a goal. I personally would look like a skeleton at some of the weights the charts say I should weigh. I think "goal" is something we each have to determine for ourselves, it's so highly individual.

I'm sorry she turned what should have been a happy experience with a victory dance into an ordeal. She probably has had some patients in the past that got obsessive about it, and from what I've seen they don't often get people who are determined to get to a normal BMI and work hard for it. If you go by the averages, you've likely far exceeded it, and that's what she has for comparison. But regardless, she shouldn't be projecting her issues on the patients.

At 5'5", I don't think you're wrong to get to 155-166. 150 is the top of the normal BMI range for your height.

If you have unhealthy physical and mental habits trying to lose that last 10lb, then I can see how that would be something problematic and worth addressing with a therapist. But if you're working toward your goal in a healthy way then.. whatever NUT.

Do you feel like you're proceeding in a healthy manner? Do you think you're obsessing over those last 10 lb you want to lose?

I don't think I am being unhealthy at all....I make sure I get all my calories in and balance my macros and a drink all my water. Do I obsess???? well, I don't know if I would use the word obsess but I do try my hardest to stay away from trouble foods and I track everything that goes in my mouth.

Is losing the weight all you're able to think about every day? Or do you feel you're living a fulfilling life that isn't only focused on the scale number?

If your NUT just thinks you need therapy because you want to lose weight, then I think she's a fool. But if your NUT saw signs that you're obsessed and only focused on losing weight to the exclusion of everything else in your life, then she is probably right to suggest therapy.

But - I have no idea what your NUT saw and only you know what's going on with you!

No, losing weight is not all I think about lol, I feel very happy where I am in life right now, even with my weight loss...but like many aspects of my life there is always room for improvement :)

These are great questions, thank you!

It seems like your NUT's concerns are unfounded then. (Therapy is awesome, don't get me wrong, I'm grateful that I've had it throughout my weight loss and it might benefit you regardless... but not for the reasons your NUT seems focused on!)

Oh - I just wanted to clarify that I pretty much think therapy can be beneficial for everyone, so I'm not targeting you out here based on anything you've written :D

"Is losing the weight all you're able to think about every day?"

-This is such a salient question. I had to go back into counseling (previously I had a food addiction in grad school and it was suggested I may have BED in grad school) because I am now struggling with hypoglycemia and trying HARD to get back to the 142-147 lbs I set as my goal weight. My endo, NUT, nurse practioner and sister felt that I was waaaaayyy too hard on myself, stressed out about food, and putting too much pressure to get back to that goal weight.

So...here I am. Back in counseling...back to guided meditations. I STILL cant run but just got cleared for weight lifting AND yoga (in addition to my hour of walking) per day. Nothing beats stress like a good run but I cant be passing out and tanking my blood sugar.

Three pounds below Goal!!! Yay !
