My program called the stages this way:

Stage 2: Clear liquids. In the hospital (day after surgery).

Stage 3: High Protein, Full liquids (including shakes and yogurt). Before leaving the hospital - week 2.

Stage 4: Moist, Soft Protein (add eggs, fish and beans). Weeks 3 - 6.

Stage 5: Low Fat, High Protein Low Sugar. Weeks 6 - 8.

  • High Weight before LapBand: 200 (2008)
  • High Weight before RNY: 160 (2015)
  • Lowest post-op weight: 110 (2016)
  • Maintenance Weight: 120 (2017-2019)

My surgeon allowed what was called a "blended diet" as soon as we left the hospital. So essentially a "puréed" diet (should be the consistency of being run through a blender or more liquid). We were on that for 2 weeks, then added a few VERY soft foods like scrambled eggs for another 2 weeks

I noticed you had the RNY and others posting to this threat have had different surgeries (I had the DS and I noticed a few others had the VSG).

Stages for RNY are different than the VSG or the DS. I suggest that for at least the first month, follow your surgeon's instructions for your particular surgery.

My surgeon uses the same diet for RNY and VSG progression.

I didn't have a discrete puree phase, as it was just part of the mix of liquids and soft foods that we could use as tolerated from the hospital on out for the first month (the thought of pureed lettuce - eeewww - served in the hospital put us off of pureeing anything!) Given their 20+ years of experience with the sleeve at that time, I would have to say that day six is not too early in general, though it may be too early for some individuals. But yes, compared to some programs that may have their patients on liquids for a month or more, it is early.

The best advice is to simply follow your doc's program and progression as failure to do so will get you the blame for any problems that may arise, whether related or not. And, tired is normal for now; keep with it.

Your best bet with diet progression is to follow your surgeon's recommendations.

Everyone heals at their own rate. You might be fine in a week or it might make you sick. If you still have too much swelling and get sick or pain from the purees, then go back to liquids for a few days.

TOH weight management does indeed recommend purees STARTING at day six. The starting is important because it can be a bit of a stuttering start! lol I thought it meant full out anything I wanted and I was proven so so wrong! From your point I know the stages seem to take forever but just take it slowly and your little friend will thank you. Hope you are well!!

I was not a fast loser but who cares as long as you get there! I know the newbies check the trackers and the signatures so although I kind of lost track of how the rest of the weight came off, you should know that it was not fast and furious but it was slow and steady!

current BMI 24.7 that, my friends, is NORMAL!!! Strong is the new pretty!
