Try visiting a farm some time, rather than watching PETA shock videos. It will probably surprise you.

Seriously, this. I get a lot of my meat from a local farmer and I'm pretty sure the animals have a cushier lifestyle than most house pets do :D

Many animals also die in the production of grains, or get baled into hay accidentally. Even on agrarian farms animals are frequently accidentally killed. They also set traps and poison animals digging up fields or trying to eat grain in the silos. Farming in general involves animal death as a by-product. Even organic stuff, yes. I say this as a very serious former vegetarian - the only way to assure that your food is 100% cruelty free is to grow it yourself.

As for how I imagine eating something borne of innocents, much as I picture drinking the blood of my enemies after I crush them, I try to visualize each meal with a side of bacon.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

I can't count the number of times I've had to explain this to people about how large-scale farming works.

And, like you, I was vegetarian for many, many years. My bff is a vegan - but she's also totally awesome. It irks me when people preach about the evils of eating meat, but don't seem to care about animals otherwise.
