Allergic to Premier Protein?

I still like premier protein after, if anything the chocolate doesn't taste as "ashy" to me anymore. But...my tastes have changed in that my bone broth that I make and love tastes almost "tinny" to me now...weird because it hasn't been in a can but it just tastes sweetish and tinny. Hard to describe. But I also bought cases of premier protein figuring I would suck it up or re-sell them if necessary. I heard you can get four packs at metro. Try the chocolate Pure Protein ones from Walmart, they come in a four pack. It's only 23 g of protein vs the 30 in premier but worth a shot.

I think this is different for everyone but I found some flavors to be too intense or magnified after surgery. Sometimes it was good but mostly not. A lot of flavored water type beverages I had to water way down (like crystal light). I even noticed bitter aftertaste's on some things I never did before.

But coffee...oh my god. I noticed nuttiness and overtones I could never taste before and it was magic.

I'd really love to see a study on why we're all addicted to coffee I used to drink coffee like I ate dessert, over-sweetened and as an occasional treat, probably with whipped cream. Now coffee with a splash of heavy cream is LIFE.

I can't wait to have a good cup of coffee again. I'm off it for about a month now. I don't bother with decaf, because really whats the point? But uuuggggghhh... a nice milky cup would be heaven. Especially on a cold grey day like today.

Erin I wish I could give you a medical reason for the change, but I don't know that answer. I'm sure there are smarter people than me on this board who can answer that question. I only know that my sense of smell and taste changed after surgery.I had the DS so I assume it has to do with the internal changes and don't know if it's different for different types of surgery.

It even went as far as water. I specifically remember that the only "water" that didn't taste nasty was Desani. It probably lasted 6 months. I had a horrible time finding a protein shake I liked. But my surgery was 15 years ago so the choices were very limited back then.

As with everything else WLS related, everyone is different and everyone will react differently to their type of surgery. You have to find what works for you and stick to it. Which is why not buying a case of something will save you in the long run.

It's like night and day. What you like today could taste like pure poison after surgery.

On the other hand, I did develop a liking for cashews post-op, and I never liked cashews before. Too bad the same thing didn't happen with seafood.

The surgery is similar to our tastes as people experience in pregnancy. You can smell everything and things taste strange/off/weird for a while. They don't really know why, but instantly things may taste sweeter (sickeningly so, in fact). You also may find that you love things you never did before (me: coffee) and hate things you loved before (me: cottage cheese).

Now that I'm further out I think food tastes so much better than it ever did. But, I attribute that to eating a pretty clean diet and staying low carb. It makes it easier to stay quality over quantity as time goes on.

I actually do better with whey isolate. Premier is good, but it's not 100% isolate. They do make a clear shake now that works better for me as well. It's 20g per bottle, but it's very low calorie and also not "milky" so I prefer it. Might be worth seeing if GNC or somewhere has single bottles of many RTD shakes for sale so you can try a few.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
