Sticks of butter

So, I was a bit discouraged today -- 5 weeks out and "only" lost 26.2 pounds. I know it's not a contest and that I'm doing all the right things but still today a bit blah.

I was whining to one of my friends and she replied 26.2 pounds is the equivalent to 104 sticks of butter -- go to the store and try to carry that around and then let's talk about "only" 26 pounds.

It made me laugh and gave me perspective again so I thought I'd share.

I like that image! I don't think I weighed myself at all though at first until I saw my doctor again for my 3 month. However, some of that was my actual size. I didn't have a bathroom scale I could fit on, but I think having that time to keep numbers out of my head was helpful. Plus, our bodies are really out of whack after surgery, they have no clue what we've just done to ourselves and are struggling to figure it out for a little bit. Be happy you shed off all that butter!

Yes, I've been really bad about obsessing on the scale; I did decide this morning that I can weigh myself twice a week but not going to do more than that!

you may have watched too much of "My 600 lb Life" before surgery. Not many of us "normal" obese people lose 30+ lbs the first month - there are a few, but they're outliers. Not that I've done any scientific polling on this, but just hanging around these boards for a few years, I'd say most people lose in the 15-25 lb range the first month. I was "only" down 18 lbs at five weeks out, and I've lost all my excess weight. We all lose at different rates depending on several different factors (gender, age, starting weight, metabolism rate, etc etc etc). Your level of commitment to your program is going to be a much bigger factor in your ultimate success than how much you lost the first month, so don't worry about it! Just keep your nose to the grindstone...

Keeping your nose to the grindstone only gets you a very pointy nose.

Sorry, I had to do it. We're in the midst of a bar More after (8-12"), so I needed a bit of humor.

Congrats on your 26lb loss. You should be extremely proud of yourself. That's a lot of butter!

I have never seen my 600 lb life! Thank you for sharing your first month and where you are now, it helps it with whatever expectations I have pulled out of the air!!

oh wow! I've watched a few episodes. Unfortunately, I think much of the general public's perception of weight loss surgery and types of people who go for it are based on that show. Those folks are pretty extreme cases!!

Think of it this way, if you had not had the surgery chances are you would have a gain of 26 pounds. We all know the scale just kept going up and up and up. If not, we would not have ever considered WLS.

Hang in there. They don't call this a journey for nothing. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint
