Wow .. this is stunning and so tragic .. To lose all that weight only to then commit suicide .. He mentioned "confronting demons" in his last FB post, so I guess it was something other than his weight at issue ..

You really never know. My personal trainer committed suicide a couple of years ago. She was one of the most positive people I knew. She really kicked my butt and pushed me to do things I didn't think I could do. She was 39 years old and beautiful. She had been married a little over 2 years and we believe that was the cause of her problems. I was told by a friend that her husband decided he wanted to take a break. She shot herself in the head with a gun that was a birthday present from her husband.

I still miss her and wish that she had reached out to anyone. She had so many people she could have called or texted and she didn't. Her final words were posted on Facebook they were "I'm so sorry". This is such a tough one, especially for those who are left behind.

Unfortunately when we are fat we want to blame our issues on that. Then we lose weight and we still have major issues that we no longer can blame on us being obese. Sometimes we think : when I lose weight I will do this or that, be this or that...

Counseling is really important as we lose weight, more so at the end of our journey, the thinner we get, the more counseling we may need.

That is so true, Hala. Losing weight helped, but it did not fix all my issues. It fixed the physical ones, yes, but my emotional ones are very much still a work in progress and probably always will be. Everyone should take care of their emotional health. It's so very, very important.

Much is made my the slightly higher rates of suicide among WLS patients. But I wonder--have these studies controlled for the fact that many people became obese in the first place because of underlying psychological issues? I hope I don't offend anyone, but to get to O, MO and SMO levels, there are things going wrong in the mind and in the spirit, as well as the body. I hope the medical establishment is getting better about probing to find out if a persons obesity is a symptom. It seems that right now, they mostly treat it as THE disease. Given the prominence of therapy on OH, I think most people here get that. But I'm curious if that is the case at large?
