My husband left a package of pop-tarts on our computer desk for like 2 weeks.  I would always forget they are there until I need to use the computer.  He finally took them and ate them, but I begged for a small piece (size of a quarter).  It was sooo good.  I know WLS, but I needed something normal.

Yes I do cheat, matter of fact I'd like a krispy kreme doughnut right now....(just kidding) but I do cheat although I count it toward my cal intake, just becareful and don't make it a habit, I think every now & then a small dessert is ok, there are also many lowcarb dessert recipes that are good.

No, I don't do it all the time.  It is like once in a blue moon and no more than a lick or a very small piece like a quarter.  I am still scared of dumping.  I haven't really dumped yet, so I am still watching.  I do smell alot of things though.

I don't consider it cheating if it's worked into my daily calorie intake.  If it makes me sick or dump I know it's my own fault and suffer the consequences.  I was having a very difficult time with ice cream until I tried a flavor that made me dump and dump hard this past Sunday.  My own fault but I won't be having ice cream for a while ~ I have some sweet freedom bars in the freezer that I will stick to.  My snack tonight was a veggie burger with melted cheese; not a sweet but packed with protein and satisfying. Of course we all have something we are not supposed to...we are human.  You just need to control it because lack of control is what got most of us here today.

This is my opinion only.  Weight loss surgery doesn't mean a lifestyle of not being normal or having to cheat.  If you think of food as cheating or something bad then that is how your relationship with food will remain.  What has worked for me is to realize that food is not the enemy and you can have things in moderation if you can control yourself.  It's so important to learn this early on post-op and continue to apply it years out.  I have things all the time that would be considered "bad".  I now know what my limits are and stick with them.  That's what has worked and I don't allow myself to feel deprived.

Amy,  you said it perfectly.  I miss seeing you on the boards and our talks.  Here is a hug from your sammich making buddy.  How is the new job going? Give a big hello to your hubby for me, are you planning on coming to the Detroit convention this time?  Let me know. Catherine

Hey Catherine, I miss seeing everyone!  It's nice to still see you around the boards. The job is going wonderful.  I enjoy everyday.  I wish I could come up for the Detroit event, with things so busy down here I won't be able to make it this year.  If they have another one next year, I'll try to make it.  I had so much fun last year, it was a memory of many smiles.  You probably made me smile and laugh the most, along with Pat.

I agree. I'm one of the "anything in small amounts" people. I can eat almost anything but jus***** bitty portions. GBS is my ultimate portion control solution.

Having something on the no no list once in a while as a treat will not harm your surgery. Just don't do it all of the time. Your head is what controls your feeding habits, and you just have to maintain control over what you eat. A cookie, or a small bit of something won't harm much, except if it causes you to dump. If you do dump, consider yourself lucky. Many, including me, do not dump, so we can have almost anything to eat in small quantities. This is where "smart decisions" control whether your WLS is successful or not. The surgery is only the tool, and you have to "be smarter than the tool you're working with". DAVE

I do dump and it seems from reading other peoples' post that I dump more easiy than most people. And I will go waaaaaaaaaaaay out of my way to avoid dumping...

I'm like you, dump easily and go that extra mile to NOT dump.  I make smart choices when I want a "treat".  So now a "treat" is a protein bar that is chocolate covered ~ satisfying and part of my lifestyle change.  I do make sure if the "treat" is a REAL "treat" I count it in my calorie intake and go from there.  Like Dave said we can't deprive ourselves...it's about control of portion size.

I agree with Amy. I don't believe there is such a thing as cheating. I've been eating chocolate since my third month (almost every day). I've lost 100% of my excess weight. I think part of my success is my respect for myself and respect for food. I would eat a whole pop tart if I really wanted it. BUT I do keep track (roughly) of my daily calories. I stay between 1,000 and 1,500 calories per day.  I am 16 months out. My surgeon says--you've got to watch SOMETHING. It doesn't necessarily mean exactly what you eat--but you've either got to watch the scale, the calories, or something, or you won't know if what you're doing is working. I weigh myself every morning and every night and I generally watch my calories. To date, I've never had a month where I didn't lose. You've got to do what works best for you. For me, the scale is the indicator that lets me know if I'm eating okay or I need to cut back. Jill PS--you NEVER want to think of yourself as a "cheater" It is not good for you. Think of yourself as a happy, thin person and you will become one.

Hello Jill, I just finished reading your entire posting and I have to say that I agree with your husband, you do light up OH.  What an awsome ATTITUDE you have!  You are such an inspiration to me. I had my surgery 3/6/08 and I am losing sort of slow, but at least I am losing weight.  I want to ask you about the vitamins that you are taking.  Can you tell me if your doctor recommended a certain vitamin? Also, you say that you are on a certain amount of calories a day and that you don't count anything except for calories.  Can you tell me a bit about that.  I count my protein grams and my liquid intake. Maybe I need to be counting my calories.  I do try to eat protein first.  I guess I am just a worrier and I want to do it the right way, but I think life would be so much better if I could just relax a little more about this.   I hope you can offer some advice b/c you seem to be doing so well!  CONGRATS on the weight loss and the size 0 and size 2.  That is where I am wanting to go.  Yipee, here I go! Also, one other question...Do you ever have a soda?  I know they tell you not too, but I love my Pepsi's.  I have started to have one or 1/2 of a can each day.  I hope I am not messing up. Well, I am at work, so I had better close, but I really love your post.  It is the BEST one on OH! You have a wonderful attitude Jill and I wished you lived closer so that I could be blessed to have you as a friend. Hugs, Sherry

I don't consider it cheating.. but I've tried a bite of potatoes, even though my nut says no. And I've had a bite (literally just a tiny bite) of my husbands hot fudge sundae. I have to say, I don't miss any of it, so I think that really keeps me in check. I missed it in the beginning, but as the weeks have gone by, my cravings have disappeared. Will I try a cookie or a bite of cake one day? You bet. But not any time soon I'm sure. I'm content where I am. And potatoes just don't do it for me anymore.. how sad is that?! But I'm glad to say that fruit is my number one sweet craving. I would love a soda.. but I figure I probably won't like it once I try it and I probably won't like the feeling in my stomach.. so that's not on the attempt to try list for a very long time!

Going into WLS I made everything - and I mean everything - ok to eat. Little Debbies, Pop Tarts, chips and dip, birthday cake, etc.  Having a history of extreme black and white eating disorders I need to live in the gray now. I have made foods off limits before and by doing that it gives that particular food P-O-W-E-R. I refuse to let food hold any power over me anymore so everything is ok to eat. Living this way makes me not desire it so I am ok with this.  Now I am a moderation eater so it takes a lot of hard work and effort to not go too far. Sometimes I do enjoy too much but I am far more concious of it now and can pull back the reigns if I start going overboard. But one day at a time I suppose. Choose to learn about yourself daily and you can't get too ****y while you recover from obesity. You won't ever be cured IMO, but you can recover.  Keep up the good fight. Jen

I had my first expierence with dumping last night.  ( I am 3 months post op) UGH!  I wasn't aware that even the quarter size piece of cake was too much for me.  I got the shakes and thought I needed food so I had a single serving of mandarin oranges.  I still felt funny.  Light headed.  I waited a couple hours and then I had 3 frosted animal cookies and a paper cup of milk.  BIG mistake!!  I had the WORST tummy ache.  I was wishing I could throw up or something.  Nothing but bloat.  So if you eat what you feel you shouldn't, know that there is always the worst things that can happen.  I agree that a little should be ok.  Just know your body and how much is a little.

Ok, maybe, "cheat" is the wrong word.  I don't know another word to use.  I am, also, still dealing with the issue that "you need to be a little hungry or you are doing something wrong."  I had that issue before WLS and I still have it.

I am not even 2 weeks out, so I can honestly say no.  But, on my pre-op 2 week liquid diet I did cheat once - I had one bite of the seafood filling from a sub my son had. Right now, I'm honestly so full from my protein, vitamins and getting all of my water in, I can't even think about cheating. But I do find myself watching LOTS of food *****n the Food Network, which I NEVER did before. haha I'm watching Diners, Drive-ins and Dives right now.

I have not deviated from my instructions from my Nut or Dr. I feel as though i am too early out to start that. I do not want to run into complications because I didn't listen to what they told me. I am so afraid of returning to the bad habits of how I got he
