Just wondering...how does having your gallbladder removed during RNY affect recovery? does it increase the time you are "down and out"?

My gallbladder was removed when I had surgery, I don't think it effects your down time anymore than just having the RNY done.

Thanks for your quick answer! My ins will pay for both so think when I go to the surgeon I will ask what he thinks about the chole at the same time. Would like to avoid as many problems down the road as I can.

Many surgeons will remove it at the time of surgery now.  Mine wanted to do it because of the massive weight loss there was a huge chance of having stones later.

MY surgeon requires a battery of tests prior to surgery. One is to check the gallbladder. If it's bad, he takes it out during surgery. From those that have had that done in my support groups, I've not heard of any additional problems.  One poor woman had hers tested OK, the RNY was done, and then 8 months later the gallblader had a problem and had to be removed in a separate surgery.

I soooo would like to avoid another surgery down the line if I can. I just can't wait to get this thing done. Has been a LONG time coming.

I am scheduled for VSG and Gallbladder at the same time in June.  Previous dieting caused my gallbladder to fail.  It is not fun, major pain when it fails to work.  The need to have my gallbladder out sped up my plans for WLS-VSG because I don't want to have to go in again and again.  I am concerned about the scar tissue from surgery after surgery.  Pain in the right rib, nausea and major indigestion are the symptoms.  I have gallbladder dyskinesia (jwhich means will not move the bile out) but no stones All in all it is really going to depend on you surgeon.

my insurance only does open rny, so I had the option to get the gall bladder removed at the same time - my surgeon recommended it, but left the decision up to me.  When I had my ultra sounds prior to surgery, they found "sludge" in there, so it seemed the right thing to do to have it removed and I did.  Very good idea to do in my opinion to avoid another possible surgery down the road.  the location and length of the incision is a little different, but I don't think it affects recovery at all.

I don't think so. I had mine removed when I had my surgery. After my two day stint in the hospital, I went home and I felt fine. In fact, I really didn't have much pain in stomach after the surgery at all. My sister-in-law had just her gallbladder removed and she was only down for maybe a week if that. So, I don't think it affects the recovery process.

Personally I would go for it!  I had my RNY In sept. of 2007 I had to have my gallbaldder out two days ago I think It would have been easier to have 1 surgery than 2.    Good Luck!
