I picked up on that yesterday with the nurse, and several of our OH "siblings" have given me advice similar to yours.    I hate all of the insecurities and conotations that go along with being fat.  Even when we ask for help i.e. surgery, we have to worry about how we appear.  I hope to God 18 months from now I am approaching MY goal weight, and I can stop feeling so ... disrespected by the medical community and the average Joe on the street.

Congrats on attaining your goal weight!  Thanks for taking the time to answer.

One gallon of water weighs 8.8 lbs.

If your initial weight isn't acceptable, try water-loading.

Topic: 1 week post-op; need advice
I had my VSG one week ago, and I'm finding post-op difficult.  I take several medications daily which I have to crush up and take with juice--yuck.  When I consume full liquids, my tummy hurts a bit.  But the worst part is that I'm not able to focus mentally.  It's like I can't get started on any task without eating first--and I can't eat.  Any suggestions, or better yet, any articles anyone can refer me to, about handling the first post-op weeks?

To qualify without co-morbidities you need to be Morbidly Obese, which is a BMI of 40 - them's the insurance company rules UNLESS you want to self pay!

Topic: Dr Alan Saber, Univ Hosp, Cleveland, anyone?
Going with the Sleeve after having band failure, sticking to northeast OHio/Pittsburgh area docs - going to be self-pay.

Price is $5000 -$7000 less at Univ Hospital in Cleveland than Cleveland Clinic or St Vincent Charity or Summa Health in Akron.  Of course I want one of the best surgeons -anyone have experience - good or bad with Dr Saber or anyone else at the other hospitals mentioned?

I don't know anyone personally who has had WLS - so I depend upon this board for most of my information.

    Please help if you can.

The only person you cheat is yourself.  I scream that in my head when I walk down the aisles of the grocery store and stop in front of anything carby and fattening.  I don't know what helps, I hate feeling bloated and miserable more then I like eating.  I am fasting today to prove I am not addicted to carbs like I think I am.  Its stupid but its a mental thing to get my head back in the game.

    Good Luck

Welcome to the "bait and don't switch" world of bariatrics.

Everyone says they can do the DS, until you say you want one. They all know the data supports the DS as having the longest success rate of all of the available surgeries. Their own medical society has the data so they use it to market their business.

However, when you get to their office, they tell you things like the DS is the "last resort" or "a better surgery for you is XYZ" because the DS requires more skill and they can easily do XYZ, even though it has crappy long-term results. To learn the DS, you have to leave your practice and proctor with an experienced DS surgeon, sometimes for months, to learn it. How many surgeons can afford to walk away from their practice for any length of time to learn a new skill?

A good place to start looking for a real DS surgeon is www.dsfacts.com.

"Lying" can sometimes be part of this process....

NOT insurance fraud type of lying, but the ever perky attitude type of lying.

I found that everthing I said could and was used against me... not by the surgeon or the nurse, but the Psychologist and Nutritionist in the office demanded a perky, "can-do" attitude at all times, or everything STOPPED.

That being said..... I genuinely did have a "can-do" attitude, I just learned to pu**** a bit over the top at times to get the job done!

Ten years ago when I had mine it was very different. My doc, luckily had been doing it for 25 years before so he had good statistics to go by, knew what we needed nutritionally post op and was smart enough to set up support groups for his patients for extra help. Here I am 10 years and 5 months later and I am still at or around goal - pretty close, within a few pounds. I still am so glad I had this done, and I'm happy, healthy, eat everything I ate pre op except in smaller or different portions, and loving life. No complications, no problems and I know what my surgery was called - lol. I take vitamins, eat protein forward or protein only meals still and don't even remember I'm a post op most days. It's habit to eat protein first, it's habit to not put a glass of anything to drink on the table at meal time and it's habit to have a bottle of water with me at all times. Many patients in the past were operated on and sent home with the instructions "do the best you can". For some it worked, for some common sense or a good diet book helped them along.  For others the stomach surgery wasn't brain surgery and they failed. It's better now, but still so many lack basic education in nutrition, supplements and post op lifestyle. Thanks for posting this - I found it very interesting.

How does one find a "DS" surgeon?  My doctor will perform DS surgeries, but I think he looks at that one as a last resort.

    Agree with Kelly....

You may cause more issues by drinking bottle #2.

Also agree with Dave about the Fleet.... but only after asking surgeon!

I'm on the DS bandwagon too. I love food and never feel deprived, even four years+ out. I do NOT diet.

Go see a real DS surgeon and THEN make your decision. www.dsfacts.com.
