I have to admire your appetite.  I had none for way more than 5 days after my surgery.  Every swallow of a clear liquid was torture.  Yet I did survive and so will you.  You'll be amazed by your progress.

Get a new surgeon.  I was no way over 500 pounds, yet I was 200 pounds overwieght.  (The only time in my life I was a "super acheiver"-ha!)  I've seen the RNY performed on people who weight more than 600 pounds, so weight alone does not determine surgery type. That nurse is a moron. And so is the surgeon if he keeps an employee who spouts such ignorant **** waddle.

The trouble with plant-based proteins is that most of them are 'incomplete' proteins, meaning they don't supply all of the essential amino acids. This means you have to get protein from more than one source, every day. Also, most plant-based proteins come with a lot of carbs attached, so---you'd have to really THINK about what you're eating.
What about amino acid supplements?  Couldn't a vegetarian use them?  I'm a meat eater through and through and I use them based on advice from a board certified nutritionist who actually knows something about malabsorption.  Of course I don't know how they are derived so it could be a problem if they are animal based like so many forms of insulin.  Just thought I'd throw this out for thinking purposes.  I do not pretend to be an expert so if someone actually knows something please chime in.

I had a subscription after getting a sample at my surgeon's office.  Quite frankly, all I remember is my impression that it was little more than a slick advertisement medium for plastic surgeons.  It also didn't have much that I could use since I had the DS.  Yeah, I realize more people have had the RNY so it pays to aim your articles at the biggest audience.  The bottom line:  I am a DSer who has absolutely no interest in getting plastics so I let it lapse.

I've also read a lot of complaints here about people not getting their magazines.  MY humble opinion?  Save your money or spend it on something actually useful.

How well I know the pain of having to choose which one thing could I do; grocery shopping while riding one of those little carts or a very limited trip to Walgreen's for just a few items.  All that is in the past since I lost 80% of my excess weight and got a new artificial knee.  I'm not running any 5K's but I can shop until I drop at many, many stores. Some of those trips even result in very nice clothes.  Omar the Tent Maker is sorry to lose me as a customer. I think the douche canoe has used too many steroids...

What men do not realize is that steroids cannot enhance or enlarge the penis in any way. In fact, the result is quite the opposite. The effects of steroids do not just stop at damaging the body, but they can cause a man to become impotent either temporarily or permanently. When taking steroids the sexual desire is decreased significantly and it is hard to even get an erection. Essentially, the penis becomes paralyzed and is unable to perform as it should. Over an extended period of usage, steroids can even cause a penis to "shrink" to a much smaller size then it once was. This is of course not completely studied as of yet, but many people believe that this is the case. Most likely it is the steroids that are stopping the penis from getting erect and thereby showing the penis in the non-erect state rather than actually causing the penis to shrink. No one can really reach a definite conclusion.

Do you have conditions for which you must take NSAIDs?  Ulcers can occur and and EGD cannot be performed with the RNY on the blind portion of the stomach.  There are other good arguments concerning diabetes if you have that, but I don't know them. I read your post  here first.  If you haven't posted on the DS forum, do so ASAP.  Patients who know about the DS and diabetes can tell you more about the DS and what it does for diabetes.

Perhaps instead of "yes" or "no", you can start saying , "Let me get back to you after I check my schedule.  Things are kind of hectic now and I don't want to commit to anything I can't do."  Then wait a while .  Do an honest evaluation of your needs and your time.  Sometimes you may still be able to say "yes" but ii it's "no", you can beg off and tell them you just can't work it in.

So many of us are conditioned to just say "yes" without thinking.  This method let's you still be honest and giving when possible.  Me, I've gotten to the point where I just say 'no", but then I'm way older than you and probably not nearly as nice. (Although I did ease it into it.)

My lesson learned?  Refer to spontaneous abortions as miscarriages.  I was interviewing a mother for her latest baby's birth certificate.  I asked her to confirm the abortion and the poor thing went bat **** crazy on me.  Of course I apologized profusely and told her that "spontaneous abortion" is the same thing as a miscarriage.  We both learned something from that encounter, but I think I learned the more valuable lesson.

Topic: RE: The Importance of Personal Health Records
Today I had an appointment with Dr. Endo to see what to do next about my osteoporosis. I was very discouraged because after a year of IV Boniva, my follow up bone density scan was read as worsening osteoporosis. Dr. Endo had very specific labs he wanted drawn every 3 months and I diligently got them drawn. What I didn't do is remind Dr. PCP to send the results to Dr. Endo. I just assumed since Dr. PCP referred me to Dr. Endo, he would make sure Dr. Endo had the lab results. (Yeah, we ALL know what happens when we assume.)

However, I had all my labs from Dr. PCP. I made a graph of the results and saw a trend. However, I had no idea what the trend was or what the results meant. Dr. Endo looked at my graph and gave me a very detailed explanation of what those results meant.

    Lessons learned:

    • I should not have let the bone density results send me into panic mode. They were just part of the equation.

    • I will not depend on my PCP to forward my results to Dr. Endo.

    • I.AM.RESPONSIBLE.FOR.MYSELF. Yeah, Dr. PCP is great. Having a PCP who is board certified in nutrition and actually knows about my surgery is a godsend. He, too, is part of the equation.

    • This is an area of my life where organization is of the utmost importance. The shoe boxes of unorganized photos is a nuisance. Unorganized Personal Health Records are dangerous.

"Never" is unrealistic.  Your doctor knows that, you know that. The key is not total deprivation because as you are aware, it could lead to binging. Being aware of your limits is good.  Now you just have to find that happy spot between "never' and "OMG, I just ate a whole bag of Snickers."  Just remind yourself that every action you take has a consequence.  The more you are aware of the consequences, the easier it is to make the right choices.

I've seen several successful post DS pregnancies.

I was SMO and I'm over 60 y.o.  My skin looks way better than I could have imagined after losing 180 pounds and the elasticiy of youth.  Maybe if I was younger, it might be more ugly to me.  As it is, I am not planning on plastics as long as they make 3/4 sleeves.

I have a co-worker who wanted the sleeve and it was not covered by BCBC of TN.  She bombarded them with the names of companies that do cover the sleeve and articles about the sleeve.  They now cover the sleeve.  Unfortunately, she is not here and will be gone a week for vacation or I'd ask her what her sources were.  I do know that she got them all off the Internet. So get to researching and good luck!

You might want to post on the sleeve forum and ask people to tell you the names of their companies that covered it.

LOL!  Yes, it could come off a bit harsh couldn't it?   Or using the right tone of voice and body language, it could be delivered as a direct quote without being harsh. It's all about attitude.

I don't say everything I think, but those thoughts keep me determined to be true to myself.  Those thoughts also include that I treat people the way I would like to be treated.  It's taken me years to develop both skills of believing in myself enough not to take crap from others, yet refusing to take it in a way that does not lower me to their level.  I didn't post this with the thought that anyone should actually say this to someone.  Rather to remind us that we need to be strong enough in our beliefs that others do not hinder us on our journey.  But, hey, if someone actually wants to say this, it's their choice on how they say it..

(Oh, and I wasn't just thinking of things related to weight.  My brother has ideas on every facet of my life.  I tell him that I'll think about it and thank him for his suggestion.  I end up doing what is best for me; sometimes using his advice and ignoring it when necessary.)
