    Topic: RE: 7yrs post-op

I'm also 7 years post and have fluctuated up and down the scale a range of about 30 lbs over and over again and I never really reached my ultimate goal either.  Needed to lost another 50 lbs from my lowest ever.  Still I lost 120 lbs at my lowest and maintaining about a 100 lb loss for 7 years aint nothing to sneeze at when I get really depressed I remind myself of that over and over.   I know I allowed myself to eat all the wrong things and I also never really embraced regular exercise.   I have been doing pretty well since the beginning of June.  Weaned myself off carbs, started drinking shakes twice a day and miraculously it really keeps me from wanting to snack in the evening.  and I slowly started exercising regularly.  I'm trying not to focus on the long term and I am trying not to dwell on my past shortcomings.  Just trying to take it one day at a time.   Anytime I want to eat something I ask myself if its healthy or not for me to eat it and I ask myself if I am really hungry.  I vary my exercise...walking videos, treadmill, elliptical and weight training.  I try to do 30 minutes and eventually want to work my way up to 30 minutes twice a day or 45 minutes once if I cant fit in the morning workout.

Topic: RE: Question for Catholic Gatric Bypass patients

I went to mass at 3 weeks post op and I chewed the host completely ( i know years ago we were told not to chew)  I let most of it disolve in my mouth before swallowing.  We receive in both forms at my church.  I also barely let the wine touch my lips at that stage.

    Topic: Starting 5DPT need encouragement

    Hi All,

Today is my day 1 of the 5DPT.  Really needing some encouragement here.  I'm 6 years post op and still obese just not as obese as before WLS and yes a little healthier.  Lately I have scared myself with how much I can eat.  Anyway I'd just like to hear from folks *****trained their pouches with the 5 day pouch test diet.  Did you think it was successful and have you stayed on track since you did it.  If you tell me you lost some poundage in the process that would certainly bring a smile to my face too .   It's only 9am and I'm nervous and wanting to eat already!

    Thanks!

Topic: RE: Spouse's eating is driving me nutz!!!

OMG!!!!   Join my club.  My husband is 44, diabetic, lost a toe and still eats the way he wants too.  What is worse I have followed his habits.  I never reached my WLS goal because of the way we eat.  We eat out way too much and there is always junk in my house.  Now I know I can only hold myself responsible but it is much much worse when the stuff is all around you.  Only thing I know is I gave up on him a long time ago, and it is up to me to concentrate on myself and change MY habits.    Some days when it really gets to me I wish I lived alone and only had to feed myself.  He does virtually all the cooking in our house because he is home during the day. Wish I had more words of wisdom.  Just wanted to tell you that you are not alone.

Topic: RE: do you think we should avoid pizza??

A quote from the diet detective book... a large-sized slice of New York-style pizza would be 468 calories, equaling two hours of walking, an hour and six minutes of biking, and 50 minutes of running.          That is just MHO.  But you should know yourself and whether 1/2 a slice would lead to wanting more. Do as I say not as I have done.  I started out by testing small quantities of those foods I missed and 5 years later, I never made it to goal and I regained 32 lbs.  I'm back on the good path now, trying to avoid bad choices as much as possible and I've lost 23 of the regain.    Rosemary

Topic: RE: What are you wearing today?

Today I am wearing a lime green shirt that I bought 2 years ago and it never fit me, arms were too tight and it pulled across the chest and black jeans that I bought and only wore once or twice becuase I grgained about 30 lbs after that.  Proof that even an old lady like me (46) can turn things around at 5 years post op and start losing weight again  Rosemary

Topic: RE: The Platue Buster Diet

Jus****ch out for the big "C" constipation. when following the Buster.  I almost had to go to the ER after about 7 days on it.  Take benefiber, drink lots of water, add flaxseed to your protein shakes.  If you dont go at least every couple of days take a stool softner.

Topic: RE: OK, here is the weirdest question ever; haven't seen it here before

hmmmmm....the only desperate alternative I can think up to help you upchuck would be syrup of ipecac.  I dont know if it is even sold anymore.  It use to be recommended for use to make kids vomit if they accidentally swallowed something they shouldn't.  Then I thought I heard they weren't reccomending it anymore. Also read somewhere that salt applied to the very back of the throat may induce vomitting but I'm not sure if that is an old wives tale. I know I have gone for over an hour feeling miserable before a piece of chicken attually goes down. I do know that I use to have to calm myself down because I'd get really anxious and upset when it was stuck because I wanted it resolved quickly. It does get better the further out you are. Rosemary

Topic: RE: OK, here is the weirdest question ever; haven't seen it here before

Drinking some hot tea...or what also works for me to get it to go down is to eat something with lots of fiber slowly afterwards, a cracker.  Chicken has always been my worst enemy since WLS it has to be cooked to where it is literally almost coming off the bone.

Topic: RE: Have I failed at 4.5 months?

You mentioned that your protein intake "seems" to be fine w/out the protein shakes.  I thought the same.  I know that we aborb much less of the protein in the food we eat than we think.  Last week I added 2 protein shakes during the day and I lost 5 lbs, before I was down a couple of lbs and back up one.  I'm going to try sticking with the shakes for a while even though I'm not very partial to the taste of any that I have tried. Take it from one who didn't exercise during the 1st year, exercise is a very important piece to this puzzle.  You are right at about my lowest weight post op.  At 8 months out I stopped losing at 247.  My eating habits slipped, exercise was never really in the picture 5.5 years post op I found myself at 275 and feeling truly miserable.  I started over 6 weeks ago, changed my diet , added the exercise and I'm down 12 lbs.  I know it will come off very slowly if I am patient and stick with it "for real" this time. So luckily you are only 4.5 months out and you are at your 1st real sucky plateau and you can still take advantage of the window of opportunity to maximize your weight loss now.

    Hang in there!

    Topic: RE: question about protien

Are you certain that the foods you are eating adecuately give you the remaining 25 grams of protein at least 70 grams a day?  Wwe do not absorb all the protein we eat.  I do supplement inbewteen my protein shakes, usual snacks are, low fat string cheese, thinly sliced deli meats, yogurt, hard boiled eggs.  I have a favorite protein bar too, power crunch bars. You didn't mention exercise, that is a huge factor in maximizing weight loss, especially after the initial spurt of weight loss seems to taper off.   FYI do as I say not as I did, because I was not a very compliant post op.  I am only now at 5 years post op trying to get with the program and take off 30lbs of regain and hopefully will also lose an additional 40lbs that I never took of. Topic: RE: Help I'm gaining weight again

5.5 years post op, I had regained 30lbs, I had to be gut honest with myself and admit that I wasn't following any of the rules and I wasn't exercising.  Plain and simple, at this stage in the game there is no way around this, I'm back to diet and exercise and it is almost as if I didn't have the surgery.  I have to rely on willpower to stay away from bad foods.  Only exception is that I didn't regain all 120 lbs I only regained 30 and I do have WLS to thank for that.  I'm on a low glycemic index diet, no refined flour or sugars at least 70 grams of protein that includes to protein shakes a day, because i know my body doesn't aborb all the protein it needs from the food I eat.  I also have worked my way up to 1hr of exercise almost every day.  Have I been 100% perfect, no.  I have had a couple of moments of weakness.  I've been at this for 6 weeks now and I have lost 12 lbs, and the 1st couple of weeks I only lost 1 or 2 lbs and then gained a lb, it was very frustrating.  You have to remember that this is a life time commitment and that you will not see the rapid weight loss that you saw during the honey moon phase.  In fact it may be harder than ever to lose at this stage of the game, at least it has been so far for me.  Slow, steady and patient.  I have 18 more lbs of regain to tackle, then it will really get exciting for me.

Hi Marney I think I found my body double.  hehehe.   Saw the pics on your profile and that could be my body.  I am doing a pretty intense free weight and aeorobic routine.  I am now exercising daily for about an hour.  I'm hoping for the 14s at 220     My worst problem is huge batwings, I dont think those will magically disappear. Thanks! Rosemary

At 6' tall 220 puts me into the overweight category.  I am trying to set realistic goal for me and I even wonder if I will make it to that because at 5 years post op I am still struggling to lose.  At 8 months post op I was only down to 247.  and I started regaining and have always stayed up in the 250-265 range.   No goal is set in stone, if by some miracle I reach 220 then I will set another one. Good luck to you reaching 180

Thank you all for posting.  I posted this on Friday and was then away from a computer all weekend long.  It is great to hear from all the tall gals.  I'm at 262 right now and I'm in 18Ws or 20Ws but the 20Ws are really starting to fit loose.  My lowest after WLS was 247lbs and I was into 16Ws.  Bac then  hardly exercised at all.  I am hoping since this time around I am exercising faithfully that I my body may be even better shaped at even that weight.

Hehehe...no it's not a personal ad here.  OK, I am trying to find some motivation.  I have been obese since the age of 12.  I have no earthly idea what I will look like if I make it down to about 220 or lower.  That is my target weight at 220 I would no longer be obese only overweight and I would sure like to see some before and after picks of anyone who might be of a similar height and weight.  And also ask what size clothes are you in at 220.  I need to lose 40 lbs to get there.  I want to get there so very badly. Thanks!

Topic: RE: Can someone explain weight stalls and plateaus?

Try adding in an extra protein shake.  As ironic as it may seem you may been to increase your caloric intake a little bit by increasing the protein.  I was losing sluggishly and I switched what I am eating around.  I eat totally protein all day, shake for breakfast & lunch and small amounts of protein inbetween like cheese, hard boiled egg, cottage cheese, yogurt.  Then I have a nice sensible filling meal that includes a salad, even fruit as an evening snack.   I was only losing 1 maybe 2 lbs here and there, this week I have lost 6.  I think our bodies do get use to our routines and they stubbornly say no more until we change things up.   I'm exercising 1hr a day using a variety of different routines, walk/jog at a track, at home with some machines we have and walk videos.

Topic: RE: The Plateu Buster Diet?

A Joke maybe, ut actually the foods listed on the diet are the very foods we should eat as post ops.  Protein mostly (of course in moderation - anyone who eats half a jar of PB isn't going to lose weight.)  I did the plateau buster once before and I lost 10 lbs.  gained it all back because I went back to being sedintary and allowing carbs in my diet.  Right now I am drinking a protein shake for breakfast and lunch and I am eating protein snacks in bewteen such as a hard boiled egg, string cheese and lean deli meats.  I eat one good meal in the evenings, a sensible  piece of meat, some veggies.  Evening snack fruit or more protein and I find that limiting my intake during the day helps me to not want as much in the evening.  I am also exercising 1hr a day.  I dropped 5 lbs this week following this diet.  It is all about eating the right foods, portion control and exercise regardless of what you call the diet.   Rosemary

    Topic: RE: protein snacks

Just google protein snacks and you'll find tons of websites with ideas.  One of my favorite's is pork rind chips, yes there's protein in the chip aisle.  Unfortunately for the most part Vitamins are not covered by insurance cost.  I find buying the larger containers at SAMS or Costco a great value - once you get beyond having to use the chewable ones of course.

    Topic: RE: HELP...GAINING..WHAT IS TIMEOUT?????

Time out is basically 3 protein shakes and water a day for 2 weeks, it is extreme.   I couldn't do it. I'm trying to do sort of an inbetween.  During the day, breakfast and lunch are a protein shake.  I have a protein bar as a morning snack and I fit in a hard boiled egg or some string cheese in the afternoon as a snack.  Then I allow myself a reasonable evening meal - mostly what is reccommended on the plateau buster and then another evening snack.  Sometimes that will be a piece of fruit.  I find that I am not feeling hungry at all until in the afternoon which is why I save the egg or cheese until I feel the hunger.   Since I started what I call protein loading my day with shakes up front my weight loss has picked up. I was losing 1 or 2 lbs if that this week I lost 6.  I am doing an hour of exercise a day too, mostly walking using leslie sansone walking dvd's. Here is the The Plateau Buster Diet.   Plateau Buster Diet #1 - Do this for 10 days to break a plateau #2 - Drink 2 quarts of water a day #3 - You must have 45 grams of protein supplement and all your vitamins/minerals supplements each day (some suggest at least 60 and up to 80 gr) #4 - You may consume up to 3 oz of the following high protein foods, 5x a day beef pork chicken turkey lamb fish eggs low fat cheese cottage cheese plain yogurt or artificially sweetened (?) peanut butter beans/legumes You may also have: sugar free popsicles tea or coffee sugar free soda sugar free jello broths/bullion (sp?) crystal light drinks #5 - If it's not on the list, you can't have it for 10 days!!!! #6 - Keep a food diary and try to get up to 30 mins of exercise daily

Topic: RE: Can't get Lap Band if diabetic???

This must be the rules of this particular drs office.  I do understand why drs would prefer to reccommend the bypass RNY for diabetics due to the malabsorption factor and the dumping factor.  My understanding is that banding only restricts caloric intake and yes in the long run that can lead to improved hypertension and diabetes.    With the Bypass, the malabsorption factor means that your body isn't absorbing some of what you eat and that would include sugars.  Many bypass patients develop dumping syndrom whenever they eat carbs.  You feel physically sick and that is a deterent to eating carbs which cuts out any sugar intake.  May I add that I had the RNY and I didn't develop dumping syndrome and I am diabetic so I discovered early on that I could eat carbs anyway.  With the RNY, I went from being an insulin dependent diabetic, to 1 oral med with meals at 3 months post op and to totally diet and exercised controlled at 8 months post op.  However, because I did test limits and found that I could eat carbs, I eventually ended up back on 1 pill by 2 years post op and I am still on 1 pill at 5 years post op.  I know some diabetics come off all meds even sooner than I did, some even go home from the hospital on no diabetes meds after an RNY. My understanding on the 6 month documented diet is that drs and insurance companies want to see that you will be able to be successful post op.  If you can stick with a moderate diet and a little exercise preop you will be successful post op.  I was not required to do this, I did have medically documented previous attempts at dieting.  However now 5 years post op, I wish I would have had to go through this because I would have developed the habits I would need after surgery.  I didn't have those habits in place.  I tested eating limits early on, and I rarely exercised.  Here I am 5 years later, with over 50 lbs still to lose to be at a healthy weight and having to start all over again trying to build up basic diet and exercise habits.

Topic: RE: Did you stop craving junk food?

I am one of the unlucky ones who never dumped, my only intolerance is milk.  I have a very strong carb addiction and that has consistently overridden the surgery.  I did lose 120 lbs and regained about 30 (by 5 yrs post op).  I finally said enough is enough.  I'm following a low glycemic index diet, no junk food allowed in the house.  I still struggle with wanting to snack in the evenings but there are only good snacks in the house.  I will struggle with this for life.  I immediately started testing my tolerance level after surgery, if you can avoid temptation to try things altogether it is the best thing.   I did not mourn food because again instead I said to myself well let me just try a cookie, or a half of a burger etc...which lead to packages of cookies and being able to eat complete burger meals.  I'm absolutely certain that eating low carb is the key to avoiding snacking.  It also helps tremendously to have your whole family support.  If you are a junk food junkie and there are others brining that into the house, it will be harder to stick with the program.  I finally have my husband on board with the diet and exercise I'm doing. If I had not had the surgery and had just lost 120 lbs on my own, I would have certainly already gained it all back.  Went through that roller coaster ride several times before WLS.  Just remember that the surgery will probably not solve any other eating issues that you may have.  You have to tackle that on your own.  I would have probably lost a lot more than the 120 if I had not started eating carbs and junk. Rosemary
