You are welcome! Hope all is well and you get your surgery, and all is well with that, too!

    Check out this link:
    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/thrombocytosis/DS01088/DSECTION=causes

I had an instance of high platelets once prior to my surgery. Fortunately mine returned to normal.
I believe platelets are sometimes elevated if you have any kind of infection your body is fighting.

Good luck, hope all works out for you.

Topic: RE: Intussusception after gastric bypass
It seems I have heard of others having intussusception on this forum. More common are the internal hernias.
I had an internal hernia and small bowel obstruction...no fun. (I was 1 yr out)
Hopefully it will not happen again!

Topic: RE: Internal Hernia, Obstruction, Constipation???
I am wondering how you are doing and what you have discovered is wrong. I had an internal hernia repair back in 2oo8. My pain definitely came and went until I developed a full blown bowel obstruction. I had sharp crampy pain near my belly button, sometimes to the right and sometimes to the left. I had a lap surgery to look for an internal hernia and my surgeon said he found and repaired one. Well, I still felt like crap after that laparoscopy when I thought it was supposed to be a quick recovery. Then, 10 days after my lap surg internal hernia "repair", I had a full blown bowel obstruction with the same pain only much more severe and vomiting.
Prior to the obstruction, I had pain that would come and go and seem unrelated to eating. It did seem like sometimes if I laid in the right position, it would cure itself...like the bowel would settle into a position where thing could move and I would no longer be in pain.

    Topic: RE: Low ferritin
Anyone out there struggling with low ferritin? I have a ferritin of 6 which I have been told is quite low and ideally it should be between 120 and 140.
My hemoglobin is up from last check from 11.0 to 12.7.
I am 3 yrs post surgery. I have heard that some have to have iron infusions to get their ferritin level up. How low does it have to be before they would do that?
I am taking Feosol carbonyl iron 2X daily, making sure to take it with Vit C and not at the same time I take my calcium.
I am going to try BiFerra, as I had a buy one get one coupon and have always wanted to try it anyway. Anyone used BiFerra? How well did it work for you?

Topic: RE: Pregnant Post Bypass surgery
Yahoo has a great group for women who are pregnant after weight loss surgery. I can't recall the name of it but I am sure if you searched you would find it.

Topic: RE: I dont like needles
Another advantage of weight loss is easier needle sticks! Took the anesthia guy 7 sticks to get an IV in me prior to weight loss surgery.....now my veins stick out and IV and blood draws are no longer a problem!

    Topic: RE: ibuprofen??
No you are not supposed to! BUT, I do occasionally take some ibuprofen.....it is the only way I can survive my menstrual cramps. The big risk is GI bleeding, so I try to only use it when absolutely neccessary AND always have a little food in my pouch when I take it AND never take more that 400mg at a time.
I have done this for about 2yrs, since about 6mos out of surgery, and no problems so far....but that doesn't mean I won't have I suppose. So I take it at my own risk.

Topic: RE: Tingling fingers after surgery
Does it happen to be the hand on the side where he had his IV? As a nurse, I often notice patients will have swelling in the hand on the side where the IV has been, and that could explain carpal tunnel type symptoms. Also, if he has it in all extremeties could be an anesthesia side effect or, possibly a calcium imbalance. Calcium imbalances usually also cause severe muscle cramping, that is probably an unlikely cause. I agree that it also could be from the position he was in during surgery pinching a nerve. That can still take up to a couple of weeks to improve.
    Just my thoughts...

Topic: RE: desperate for breakfast ideas
At more than two yrs out,I still struggle with what to eat for breakfast. I usually eat like a half everything type bagel and cream cheese. But I know many can not eat bread, esp early out. I don't know how sensitive you are to sugars, but what about some peanut butter? I find peanut butter on graham crackers to be a good way to get a little extra protein for a snack....so maybe for breakfast?
I also remember early on eating link sausage once in awhile for breakfast.
Breakfast is tough one for me also, even though I wake up hungry!

Topic: RE: I was able to eat it yesterday...why not today?
I am also that way with the volume of food...at over two yrs out. Sometimes, it seems the hungrier I feel, the less I can eat! I am thinking it may be I eat too fast when I am really hungry, and don't chew it up well. But there are times when that doesn't seem to fit either.
At over two yrs out, sometimes I can eat so much it scares me! Like a whole 6in Subway sand, bread and all. Then there are days like yesterday, when I could only eat half the sandwich.

Topic: RE: I was able to eat it yesterday...why not today?
Have not figured that one out, either. I am over two yrs out and still have that problem to a degree. I do find that I am more likely to dump on anything around my period.....just when I am craving all those dumping type foods! Other than that factor, IDK!

    Topic: RE: concerns
Are you eating any solids? I know I felt full even with the shakes though. I could only eat about 2 bites. And it took me over an hour to drink an 8oz shake.

May sound corny but do some soul-searching meditation...you can find meditation music on youtube....it may help you feel where your heart lies or where God is guiding you.
Topic: RE: Need some help..any career changers here???
I became a nurse at age 30, after working in banking for 10yrs. It was a rough transition, the first couple of years being the toughest for me. I found my niche in OB and really love it now....been working for 17yrs, 15 of it being in OB. My best friend is a medical-oncology nurse and has worked in the same hospital unit since 1983! Sometimes she feels a bit burnt out.....but can't imagine working anywhere else!I can't believe how much of nursing is "on the job" learning...that is what makes those first yrs so difficult.
I guess what I am trying to tell you is to hang in there when you start working because it can be so tough early on, but so worth it when you get to the point that you know your area well enough that you can be an advocate for your patient and question docs about orders that you feel are innappropriate, etc.
    Good luck to you!

Topic: RE: How do you eat soup?
My nut says soups are not for us....to little nutrition that just goes right on through without any being absorbed! However, I do occasionally have a bit of soup now that I am able to eat more solids and don't feel like my nutrition is suffering.

Topic: RE: Had RNY 5 days ago, came home today now have wierd heel pain/feeling could it be serious?
Definitely call your doc....there is a slight possibility of a blood clot. That would be very serious.

Topic: RE: duct and intestinal obstructions...
I remember the pain i felt with my internal hernia. I was much like the other lady who had the extreme pain that would then suddenly go away. I had that internal hernia repaired and then 10 days later had a full blown bowel obstruction from another internal hernia. The pain was severe and the nausea would not go away even with Zofran IV. IV Fentanyl helped a little, but Morphine made the pain a bit worse. (When I thought it could get no worse) I can't imagine constipation could cause the kind of pain I had. The pain was internse from 1am until 7pm when they took me to surgery. I couldn't do anything but rock myself and vomit. After surgery I had infection and spent 10 wks recovering. Good luck. Hope everything is resolved for you without incident.

Topic: RE: 4 weeks out ..thank you for your help!
I could not do any of the protein supplements post-op myself and was worried sick about getting all of my protein in. I ended up just not getting it all in initially. I think it is just about impossible to do anyway with RNY. I focused on eating foods with protein as much as I could. Tuna (sometimes with melted cheese), ricotta or cottage cheese (sometimes with a splash of spaghetti sauce and mozzarella cheese and heated in the MW, my "lasagna"and refried beans with a little melted cheese. Later I could eat eggs, and chicken that I had thoroughly chewed. I don't think it cost me too much to do without some protein for a while...I know I feel great now, 2yrs out and down 137 lbs, weigh 137! Don't get too hung up on getting a certain number of grams of protein in, just do your best. Good luck!

    Topic: RE: Now I'm Scared!
I had lots of negativity mostly from co-workers. I am a nurse, and when you work in the hospital you hear all of the horror stories about the cases gone bad, etc. I was leary at first but after going to a group meeting and hearing so many success stories, I was convinced that all would go well for me. I have a couple of coworkers who could definitely benefit from weight loss surgery and are too scared to have it. One of those who could use it kept calling me "brave" to have the surgery. Even one of the docs I work with was negative. However, it has been two years and I am now down 137lbs, half of what I used to weigh and I am feeling fine. My overweight coworkers are still overweight. I had no complications initially with my surgery. I did have a small bowel obstruction last summer that caused me quite a bit of trouble. My coworkers were then like "would you still have the surgery if you knew you would have that?" Well, that is a moot question but I have no regrets. I did the right thing for me. I needed to get healthy to be able to care for my disabled daughter.
Tell her you have researched the surgery, and while you know there is a possibility of complications, some which can be serious, you choose to have a positive attitude because you know there are many success stories out there.

Topic: RE: B12 deficiency sublingual verses injection?
OK so I had my 2yr check up. The results? Down 137lbs and now weigh 137 lbs. Literally half my former self! However, my B12 level is dropping. I have to admit that I had quit taking my b12 about a year ago because the sublingual stuff was just making me nauseous--I had a bowel obstruction and secondary infection and just couldn't tolerate anything. Anyway, I can tolerate the sublingual now, but how effective is it? The doc gave me a script for injections but told me to try sublingual for 3 mos first, and get checked again at that time before doing the shots. Well, I don't want to wait if the sublingual is not going to work, because I am already feeling fatigued and having some stomach pain which is new and I have found can be related to b12 deficiency. I am going on a vacation in 1 month and want to feel good when I am gone. I am tempted to get the script for the shots filled and not mess with the sublinguals. I am a nurse and would not have any problems having a coworker give me the shots.
But I also would rather use the sublingual for now if that will work, just because it is easier and cheaper.
What kind of luck have some of you had with b12 sublinguals? Anybody find that sublinguals just did not work? Also, how much do you take sublingually? the doc did not really tell me how much to take sublingual, but I did notice the script is for 1000mcg IM per month. I have started taking 1000mcg daily sublingual. Is that too much with a b12 level of 300?

    Topic: RE: getting cold feet
As a nurse, I had heard nothing but horror stories for the most part. My coworkers thought I was crazy to have the surgery. I had originally thought I would just have the lap band, but after talking to others who had RNY and to my surgeon, I decided on RNY. I did not have a lot of the comorbidities to motivate me such as diabetes or hypertension, but I do have a daughter with a progressive neuromuscular disease that I want to be around to care for. I was worried that I would start to have all of the other problems.
I did for a short while start to wonder if I had made the right decision. Last summer (almost 1yr out from the original surgery) I developed an internal hernia which caused a small bowel obstruction then I had secondary infection which resulted in my having a drain put in. I missed about 12 weeks of work and lost a whole summer. I had trouble eating anything at all and experienced a second round of hair loss. I began to wonder if I was going to need a feeding tube and if I would ever get better. I finally just had to force myself to eat even though I had no appetite and it caused intestinal cramping every time I ate. I got over it though and now I am glad I had the surgery. I am down 143 pounds which is more than what I weigh now! My doctor says what happened to me is only about a 3-5% chance....just my luck.....even if I had known about a 3-5% chance of this happening, I would have had the surgery.
It is a decision that is very personal. You have to have the right motivation and attitude.

Topic: RE: What am I lacking???????
Are you getting plenty of fluid? My daughter has a neuromuscular disease and when she doesn't get enough fluids she has cramping. It is also something athletes can have a problem with if they don't stay hydrated. It can be tough to stay well-hydrated after surgery and dehydration can interfere with calcium and potassium uptake by the muscle cells. Just a thought to try increasing fluids.

Topic: RE: 3.5 years post op and maintaining!
Good to hear that you are maintaining. I have lost 145 and will be two yrs out in Aug. So many people have told me about the people they know who gained it all back in 2 yrs....don't want to be one of them! Someone else who had the surgery said yr 3 is the toughest. I am amazed that I am maintaining so far it is like a dream come true!

    Topic: RE: WOW moment
Hey,, Blessed 15, I see you are from Peoria. Me too! I had RNY Aug 07 and am down 145 lbs to 135! Do you go to any of the local support groups? I seem to have trouble getting to them.
