Topic: RE: Extra Skin...Plastic Surgery...Insurance Won't Pay...Really?

I had a great surgeon who got me to sign an agreement that I understood that there would be future costs involved in WLS - better quality food, new clothes and plastic surgery.

I paid out of pocket for all mine, because it WAS cosmetic - it didn't hinder my life at all - I just wanted to look better - why should anyone else pay for that?

If the skin hampers your day to day life (ie mobility etc) then it will probably be covered - anything else should be down to you!

Thank you for editing the stupid stuff out of your post - rewriting history is not always a bad thing - EXCEPT when someone has the forethought to quote your original post below    I would suggest that instead of deleting, you consider putting your hands up and admitting you made a mistake!  Gives you more integrity!

If you are going to set yourself up as some sort of expert - please at least have a vague clue of what you are preaching!   I'll enjoy checking out your posts daily now - just in case ...

Terrible advice for bands, RNY, VSG and DS - none of us are encouraged to have meals with no protein.   Fruit and cereal would make me VERY sick!

It worries me when self-appointed experts, such as the OP, is giving such bad advice - new people here could easily fall for the so called "credentials" and believe she is some sort of WLS guru

Topic: RE: Trigeminal Neuralgia or ATN

I have had it for about six years (following a facial surgery) and it is intermittent - lasting for weeks at a time and then disappearing for months and so I am not in constant pain.   Surgery has been suggested if the bouts become longer lasting or if I don't get the remission I get currently.

It is very difficult to describe the pain as it is so acute and life altering, but I am able to get some relief with Vicodin as I don't take pain killers on a regular basis and so haven't built up any sort of resistance or addiction to them.

Topic: RE: Can he take NSAIDs after the bariatric sleeve surgery?

So my suture line has never healed and I am continually bleeding - wow - surprised I have survived this long - good job I have my estate planning done   I mis-spoke when saying the only reason was the inability to scope - I think it would be fair to say that "some" have healing problems, but I doubt we ALL have!

I don't doubt that some RNY'ers are more susceptible to ulcers, especially as people who have GERD, Barretts etc are encouraged to have an RNY rather than VSG, or even DS, (not my recommendation) thereby creating a population with higher risk,    but it is disingenuous to suggest that taking NSAIDS with a VSG or DS'ers is perfectly ok for everyone too.

Sporadic or even regular NSAID use should be considerd in conjuction with medical history and acceptance of risk by everyone

ANYONE who takes NSAIDS on a daily basis  are susceptible to damage by NSAIDs regardless of whether we had a band, VSG, RNY or DS because they systemically thin the stomach lining.

The only reason RNY'ers are told not to take NSAIDS is because the remnant stomach cannot be scoped.   There is nothing "special" about an RNY that makes ulcers more likely than anyone else!

Truth is, very few of us undergo scoping to detect ulcers, and most treatment protocols are to just prescribe Carafate or other drugs without an official diagnosis.

A popular misconception.

This site is a business and is run for profit - support is a merely a good side effect of the business model.   We are merely players by invitation and the people who pay the bills call the shots - it's always been that way and always will.   This site is NOT a democracy - but I do think they try and be fair, but bills have to be paid!

As long as your ferritin levels are good and are remaining stable - why not?

Most RNY'ers, particularly menstruating women, really need to check that their labs are good before they consider it!   Do many VSG'ers suffer from iron problems?

MIne was tanked by a year out and I've had an Hb of 14 and a ferritin of (less than) 2 - undetectable by lab - so you shouldn't trust the test they do before you donate!

Topic: RE: Should I tell my step daughter who is overweight

I was a step mother at 22, so I have BTDT.   I am now a mother to two boys, 23 and 10 and I think that lying to children does them a huge disservice - are they not a part of the family?

I think it will do your step-daughter a great disservice if you have this surgery and then "miraculously" lost 100+lbs.   It's deceptive and you might find that she will find it hard to forgive you for not giving her the truth!

Your decision of course, but I have always told my children to tell the truth and so feel obliged to do the same - horses for courses !!!

ETA: The ex-wife has nothing to do with this - this is YOUR and your stepdaughter's relationship - nothing to do with her - she has her own stuff to worry about (and I am the ex-wife in my children's lives)!

If you have a smartphone you don't have any need of an Angel.   (They used to post and let everyone know you are ok after surgery - most of us can do that in recovery if we're so incined!

If you have someone you like on here, you could ask them to be your mentor, but remember there are lots of people on here who portray themselves as WLS experts when they are very far from that!

Choose someone who is a little way ahead of you, rather than years and beware anyone with a large ego!

If it's a physical problem, I hope you have a team looking at it and coming up with suggestions on how to remedy it (surgical?).

If it's a psychological problem, I hope you are getting help for that with a therapist who specialises in eating disorders.

Nobody should be this far out and unable to eat enough to sustain them - no wonder you are feeling regretful.

Please give us more details - there may be people here who have experienced this and can help with information.

I'm nearly 10 years out and my nose still runs - not all the time, but a lot of the time - I do believe it's related to the vagus nerve and nothing to do with allergies or what or how I eat.  It seems to be random at this point - and I also get chapped lips and a sore nose but I put that partly down to living at altitude!   Maybe my nose would run more if I lived anywhere else LOL!

Last minute nerves are perfectly normal and I would be more worried if you didn't have any!

Most of us sail through surgery, recovery and weight loss and as long as you don't think that you have all this down too quickly and use the first year or so to learn your new lifestyle in terms of diet, exercise, vitamins and labs etc - you will set yourself up well for long term maintenance.

I had a Teeter Totter for several years and used it often.   Worked great for me in that I didn't have to have surgery for several compressed and bulging discs

I was going to mention but not recommend a week of calcium citrate at 1500mg per day and no stool softeners or regulators LOL!   I could probably gain 20lbs in a week with just that

WLS blogs are a dime a dozen.   One of the ways to have more success with keeping people interested is to become active on a forum such as OH.   If you just turn up to promote your blog, a lot of people will ignore it because there are so many out there!

Topic: RE: Say hello and introduce yourself!

1) Where are you in your weight loss surgery journey? How are you doing so far?

I'm coming up to 10 years post RNY - I have managed to maintain my EWL, but it gets harder year by year (which I know no one wants to hear about LOL)

2) Any goals that you're currently working on? (weight, health or life related)

I work on maintaining my weight loss post menopause, tweaking my vitamins according to my labs and staying as healthy as possible.

3) What words of wisdom would you share with others?

The first 5 years are easy - it takes a lot of effort to stay successful past that and if you don't change your lifestyle, learning to eat properly, exercise well, take your vitamins and take responsibility for your health needs, you will probably regain weight and will most certainly have health difficulties down the road.   The statistics are not in our favour!
